The Jigokudani Yaenkoen park opened in 1964 and since then many thousands of people from around the world have visited the park to observe the lifestyle of the Japanese Macaque. The Japanese Macaque (Macaca fuscata) is a monkey species native to northern Japan, and is the most northern-living non-human primate, surviving winter temperatures of below -15 °C. They have brown-gray fur, a red face, hands and bottom, and a short tail - and often seem remarkably human like.

The monkeys have a body length ranging from 80 to 95 cm. The males weigh around 10-14 kg while the females are usually around 5.5 kg.

The park is located in the Yokoyu River valley, which flows down from Shiga Kogen. At an elevation of 850 meters, the area is called Jigokudani ("Hell's Valley") due to the steep cliffs and hot water steaming out from the earth's surface.

All the time the monkeys basically just ignore their human watchers and just get on with whatever it is they want to be doing.

BORNEO'S mysterious pygmy elephants may be the last survivors of Javan elephants thought to have become extinct centuries ago, the environmental group WWF said today.

The pygmy elephant has an appealing rounded appearance, and males stand only about 2.5 metres tall, compared to about 3.0 metres for mainland Asian elephants.

Their faces are smaller and squarer, their tails are longer, reaching almost to the ground, and their tusks are straighter.

Another major difference is their good temperament, calmer even than the Asian elephant which is famously cooperative and hardworking compared to the larger, more aggressive African subspecies which is rarely tamed.

It was only in 2003 that the pygmy elephants were identified as a new subspecies after DNA testing found they were genetically distinct.

WWF said satellite tracking has shown the animals prefer the same lowland habitat that is being increasingly cleared for timber, rubber and palm oil plantations.

As the saying goes, some people are born with silver spoons in their mouths. The same goes for at least one species of the animal world, according to research done in part by the University of Alberta.

A study of female red squirrels in Kluane, Yukon, revealed that advantageous ‘silver spoon’ factors such as food availability and spring temperature experienced between birth and weaning could reflect later on each squirrel’s lifetime fitness, longevity and reproductive success.

researchers discovered that female babies born into fortunate circumstances with more food, warmer spring weather and a lower population, experienced long-lasting positive effects on reproductive success, producing more offspring over the remainder of their lives.

In contrast, squirrels born into rougher circumstances with less food and bitter weather didn’t live as long and tended to wean fewer young when they were alive.

One of the world’s zaniest horses does everything but talk — but that doesn’t stop him from trying. Patches is one pampered male — a human trapped inside a horse’s body. He rides in a coordinating convertible Cadillac, eats cheeseburgers, drinks apple juice, and sleeps in a queen-sized bed.

Equine entrepreneurs and brothers Robert and Herbert Thompson are just a couple of good ole boys and their pony, doing what comes natural.

“Every time we’d start to go anywhere, he would act like he wanted to go with us.” says Herbert.

“So I said why don’t we fix the car so he can get in and out. We fixed the car, and sure enough …”

Robert says “While he’s riding in the car, he’s watching the scenery go by.”

“We’d be out riding with him in the car, get hungry and want us a burger.” says Herbert. “When we pulled in to get us one, well naturally the first thing we thought about was Patches, reckoning he would want one.”

“He answers the phone, but he doesn’t actually talk.” adds Robert.
