Google Paper: Better Image Search Though VisualRank / Image Rank

In short, a group of images retrieved for a query using traditional search methods is then further analyzed. Image recognition software finds which images in the group seem most similar to each other. It then estimates "visual hyperlinks" between them to produce a final ranking

The image above comes from the paper and shows examples of images found in a search for [mona lisa]. The lines illustrate how they are all estimated to link together, with the two in the middle (as shown in the close-up below) deemed the most relevant based on linkage:

We've done several dynamic things already: traffic, weather, news courtesy of the New York Times, and YouTube. But don't wait for us to create more dynamic data - we've always believed that the greatest content is created by our users. Through the magic of Network Links in KML, any dataset can be set to auto-update at whatever interval is appropriate. The KML Gallery has several great examples, such as real-time earthquakes and current air quality.

Top 30 Firefox themes

Don’t particularly like the default theme on Firefox? One good thing about Mozilla’s browser is that you can install a new one, choosing from hundreds with different, original styles. From your top menu bar, just select Tools>Add-ons. When the window pops up select the ‘Themes’ tab and press the ‘get themes’ link at the bottom right of the window. You’ll be taken to a Mozilla page which lists up loads of different themes, organized by category, from retro to animals, sport, modern or more. On Softonic, we’ve selected a few that we particularly like, including the Vista-aero theme, Mostly Crystal and Doodle Plastik.

If you aren’t convinced by these, we suggest taking a look at Mashable’s list of 30 Firefox themes.

I quite like FOXSCAPE, with its Netscape-like interface, iFox Smooth, with its Safari for Mac feel, or Ubuntu Human theme, great for Linux fans.

Description: I recently clean installed Windows XP on my laptop, and this meant that I had to re-install all the essential software that I use. It also presented an opportunity to write a posting about how you can outfit your computer with all the essential (and non-essential) software you need using strictly 100% freeware and/or open source titles.This posting could have been titled any of the following:
