Judas Priest Leads Summer 'Metal Masters' Tour

Judas Priest will lead the bill for the first "Metal Masters" tour this summer, which will also feature Heaven & Hell, Motorhead and Testament. The Live Nation-sponsored trek begins Aug. 6 in Camden, N.J.

"We insisted on a classic metal package which is what we've got -- I will enjoy seeing all the bands," Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford tells Billboard.com. Ticket on-sale information can be found at LiveNation.com/judaspriest.

As previously reported, Judas Priest plans to perform its upcoming album, "Nostradamus," in its entirety during a fall headlining tour, but the band will debut some of the new songs during "Metal Masters." Starting today (April 21), fans can download the title track for free through the Live Nation site.

Halford promises the "Metal Masters" sets will feature "a combination of Priest classics -- including songs from our catalog never before played live."

The connection between music and mathematics has fascinated scholars for centuries. More than 200 years ago Pythagoras reportedly discovered that pleasing musical intervals could be described using simple ratios.

Writing in the April 18 issue of Science, the trio has outlined a method called "geometrical music theory" that translates the language of musical theory into that of contemporary geometry. They take sequences of notes, like chords, rhythms and scales, and categorize them so they can be grouped into "families." They have found a way to assign mathematical structure to these families, so they can then be represented by points in complex geometrical spaces, much the way "x" and "y" coordinates, in the simpler system of high school algebra, correspond to points on a two-dimensional plane.

The work represents a significant departure from other attempts to quantify music

The method could help answer whether there are new scales and chords that exist but have yet to be discovered.

The New York Philharmonic traveled to North Korea recently on a goodwill tour. I heard about this online, but it was my friend Bob from XPDA who put up a link to where you can watch the video of the entire concert online.

First, let me say that I think this is extraordinary, and fantastic. It’s arguable that the governments of both countries have a large streak of insanity running through them. Ours refuses to talk to enemies, a dangerous stance based on bad assertions, and theirs is run by Kim Jong Il, a barking-mad megalomaniac

But I am a huge fan of goodwill missions like this. If their leader doesn’t show up (and he didn’t), to heck with him. Revolutions rarely start from the top down.

And if there is better music in the world to inspire freedom than Dvorak’s "New World Symphony", I haven’t heard it.

Scale Illusion

This illusion was discovered by Diana Deutsch, and is an example of our brains “grouping” similar notes together. Two major scales are played: one ascending, one descending. However, the notes alternate from ear to ear – for instance, the right ear hears the first note of one scale, and then the second note of the other.

Phantom Melodies

Some pieces of music consist of high-speed arpeggios or other repeating patterns, which change only subtly. If they’re played fast enough, the brain picks up on the occasional notes that change, and links them together to form a melody. The melody disappears if the piece is played slowly.

Shepherds Ascending Tones

This is a recording of Shepard’s paradox synthesized by Jean-Claude Risset. Pairs of chords sound as if they are advancing up the scale, but in fact the starting pair of chords is the same as the finishing pair. If you loop this sample seamlessly then it should be impossible to tell where the sample begins and ends.
