Now we are able to offer through the Internet a huge collection consisting of 220.006 pages, which can be retrieved chronologically. With the help of the OCR technology, a researcher can also browse the content of all those 220.006 pages in order to find and retrieve a specific article or a word.
In the ELEFTHERIA newspaper, a researcher can browse articles from a total amount of 944.361 ones. Addition to that, in newspaper RIZOSPASTIS, an article can be retrieved among 33.851 ones, searching for it by the title or by the author.

Olympic torch lit in Olympia

The Olympic torch has been lit today in front of the Temple of Hera on the historic grounds of Olympia, in the birthplace of Olympism, where the Ancient Olympic Games took place. The flame was lit successfully by a Holy Priestess, according to the traditional ritual, using the sun's rays and a parabolic mirror.

Following the mythical lightning, the priestess entered the Ancient Olympic Stadium with the torch and handed it over to the first runner of the Beijing 2008 Torch Relay. The young man passed by the tomb where Pierre de Coubertin's heart is buried, to launch the long journey of harmony of this Relay. The torch will be crossing five continents and stopping in 21 cities around the world before reaching China, where it will stop in over 100 places. On 8 August, it will enter the Olympic Stadium in Beijing during the Opening Ceremony to light the Olympic cauldron.

It was the heart of the city – where ordinary citizens bought and sold goods, politics were discussed and ideas were passed among great minds like Aristotle and Plato.

Who knows where we'd be without the "agoras" of ancient Greece. Lacking the concept of democracy, perhaps, or the formula for the length of the sides of a triangle (young math students, rejoice!). Modern doctors might not have anything to mutter as an oath.

What went on at the agora went beyond the simple daily transactions of the market. The conversations that happened there and the ideas that they bore continue to affect us to this day, from the way scientists carry out their work to how we pass our laws.

The heart of public life

Some of the world's most important ideas were born and perfected within the confines of the Athenian agora including, famously, the concept of democracy.

The Theoi Project profiles each deity and creature of Greek Mythology on a separate page, incorporating an encyclopedia summary, quotations from a wide selection of ancient Greek and Roman texts, and illustrations from ancient art.
