I always enjoy hearing about the reading habits of people who are much smarter and more interesting than me. New Scientist has a feature package where seventeen big name scientists recommend books that they considered "life-changing." Here is the list of the scientists and the books they suggest, with each title linking to Amazon. Follow the link at the bottom of the post to the New Scientist article where you can read the scientists' thoughts on their picks. someone else’s world

Reason # 2: Wisdom
By reading memoirs, I learn how the good, the bad, and the
boring all accumulate into the journey of life.

remind me of my grandmother’s sayings, “Life goes on” and “This too shall pass.

Reason # 3: Expand my circle of empathy

Now I no longer need to guess how they feel. They can tell me themselves. I have
been with people as they visit relatives in an African village, have postpartum
depression, escape the rough streets of New Jersey, grow up poor in Ireland,
grow up with a world famous father, and on and on

Reason # 4: Learn about the world

Reason # 5: Feel inspired by writers who keep growing

writers keep growing, not just within their story, but also through the process
of writing about their lives. Every memoir writer develops skills, and organizes

FrshBook is offering a fresh, new and innovative way to check out new books without having to leave the comfort of your own desk. Forget about Oprah's book club or your local newspaper's reading picks, for Frshbook is a patently gripping new media experience. Powered by Flash, FrshBook allows you to virtually grab books, rotate them, zoom in and out, and flip them over to read the publisher's note. You're given an almost tactile means to browse through new books. There are fifteen books in total, each of which form a sort of viewing wall. The selection appears to be updated daily. Today's reads include a selection from Valerie Bertinelli, Anne Rice, and Danielle Steele.

A writer -- and, I believe, generally all persons -- must think that whatever happens to him or her is a resource. All things have been given to us for a purpose, and an artist must feel this more intensely. All that happens to us, including our humiliations, our misfortunes, our embarrassments, all is given to us as raw material, as clay, so that we may shape our art.

Conversations with Borges

1981-1983

No one is anyone, one single immortal man is all men. Like Cornelius Agrippa, I am god, I am hero, I am philosopher, I am demon and I am world, which is a tedious way of saying that I do not exist.

The exercise of letters is sometimes linked to the ambition to contruct an absolute book, a book of books that includes the others like a Platonic archetype, an object whose virtues are not diminished by the passage of time.

Ts'ui Pe must have said once: I am withdrawing to write a book. And another time: I am withdrawing to construct a labyrinth. Every one imagined two works; to no one did it occur that the book and the maze were one and the same thing.

Each author’s diction is characteristic, and so is his or her sense of rhythm and directness. His or her mental life, at least with regard to that particular subject, is more and more perfectly expressed by the style he or she uses. He is artful; he chooses; he manipulates; he decides; he judges every word and sound pattern and character detail and twist in the action, and yet every one of these things is automatic, given, natural, right.
