I always enjoy hearing about the reading habits of people who are much smarter and more interesting than me. New Scientist has a feature package where seventeen big name scientists recommend books that they considered "life-changing." Here is the list of the scientists and the books they suggest, with each title linking to Amazon. Follow the link at the bottom of the post to the New Scientist article where you can read the scientists' thoughts on their picks. From New Scientist:

In an interview in Playboy, Jong commented that "men and women do face similar problems, like those Isadora faced: the difficulty of separating oneself from one's family, of achieving a sense of adulthood; the dilemma of wanting to be sexually free and yet grounded in a safe, secure relationship."

Fear of Flying is also a picaresque novel that comments on the male tradition of adventure, sexual conquest, and life-for-art's-sake. Named for the modern dancer Isadora Duncan and for Zelda Fitzgerald, the novelist wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Isadora Zelda Wing is told in childhood by her mother, a frustrated artist, that she must choose between creativity or maternity.

With a Laingian therapist named Adrian Goodlove, Isadora sets off on a passionate odyssey around Europe

Adrian dumps her; but Isadora is determined: "Whatever happened, I knew I would survive it. I knew, above all, that I'd go on working."

The spring gives you a different sort of an experience altogether! The fusion of the colors and fragrance of the grass, flowers and leaves, the dipping orange sun of the late evening, the dazzling night sky filled-in with spectacular vision of stars, people milling around late into the night…The spring demands something more than a cup of coffee to accompany the reading of any book! A light book, peppered with some hot snacks would make a wonderful accompanying combination for reading in the spring!

The sharp rays of the Sun dazzle every little object it touches on! The raising mercury does not deter a serious reader from the absorption of his book!

Reading a memoir lets me lose myself while I enter someone else’s world

By reading memoirs, I learn how the good, the bad, and the boring all accumulate into the journey of life.

remind me of my grandmother’s sayings, “Life goes on” and “This too shall pass.

Now I no longer need to guess how they feel. They can tell me themselves. I have been with people as they visit relatives in an African village, have postpartum depression, escape the rough streets of New Jersey, grow up poor in Ireland, grow up with a world famous father, and on and on

Reason # 5: Feel inspired by writers who keep growing

writers keep growing, not just within their story, but also through the process of writing about their lives. Every memoir writer develops skills, and organizes material.

Impac award shortlist announced

The shortlist for the International Impac Dublin Literary Award

which was initiated in 1994, is managed by Dublin City Libraries and is the world's largest literary prize for a single work of fiction

Irish author Patrick McCabe’s Winterwood is on the eight-strong shortlist for the €100,000 prize

Each author’s diction is characteristic, and so is his or her sense of rhythm and directness. His or her mental life, at least with regard to that particular subject, is more and more perfectly expressed by the style he or she uses. He is artful; he chooses; he manipulates; he decides; he judges every word and sound pattern and character detail and twist in the action, and yet every one of these things is automatic, given, natural, right. The mind writing is no longer made of parts—the conscious and the subconscious, the voluntary and the involuntary; it is rather one integrated whole, focused and choosing, from all the worlds in the language, the single perfect one.
