Why You Need To Transition To Online Writing

A year ago, I wrote exclusively for print publications.

However, today, I write exclusively for online publications.

Why did I make the transition? A number of reasons, actually:

Writing for blogs and websites is less work per article.

It’s much more flexible.

It pays more per hour.

I set my own topics.

The people I work with are exciting.

Everything is done online.

If these reasons are compelling enough to prompt you to want to make the transition to online writing, you’ll probably be asking yourself how to go about it.

Here’s the plan I recommend:

Target a few blogs and make contact.

Start writing a few posts a week, and drop some print work.

Use those first posts to get new gigs.

Repeat, increasing your rate and getting better gigs.

Slowly get out of your print commitments.

Enjoy.

It’s not difficult, but if you follow my plan, don’t expect the transition to be instantaneous. I made a deliberately gradual transition, over the period of a few months, and I recommend a similar process.

claimed to be disgusted, especially since the Sanrio name and Hello Kitty character were on it.

They

contacted Genyo Co. and asked them to stop

Genyo Co. had no intention of letting a hugely profitable product be taken off the shelf

The fight between the two companies continued

until Genyo Co

found themselves in tax trouble

Sanrio

revoke the license and

took the “shoulder massagers” off the market.

you can imagine my surprise when I received an email letting me know that they have revived it - selling it for just over $10 (1260 yen) in the Sanrio Japanese online store

1. The 11 Times Trick

We all know the trick when multiplying by ten - add 0 to the end of the number, but did you know there is an equally easy trick for multiplying a two digit number by 11? This is it:

Take the original number and imagine a space between the two digits (in this example we will use 52:

5_2

Now add the two numbers together and put them in the middle:

5_(5+2)_2

That is it - you have the answer: 572.

If the numbers in the middle add up to a 2 digit number, just insert the second number and add 1 to the first:

9_(9+9)_9

(9+1)_8_9

10_8_9

1089 - It works every time.

2. Quick Square

If you need to square a 2 digit number ending in 5, you can do so very easily with this trick. Mulitply the first digit by itself + 1, and put 25 on the end. That is all!

25² = (2x(2+1)) & 25

2 x 3 = 6

625

3. Multiply by 5

Most people memorize the 5 times tables very easily, but when you get in to larger numbers it gets more complex - or does it? This trick is super easy.

You need two things:

Mail forwarding

Gmail “send from” feature

Here’s how to do it step-by-step.

Set up your other email to forward to your desired Gmail account.

Go to Settings–Accounts. Under “Send mail as,” click “Add another email address.” Enter your name and alternative email address here.

Click “Next step,” then “Verify.” Gmail will then send your alternative address the verification link and code.

Since you’ve already set up your alternative email to forward messages to Gmail, simply open up your Gmail inbox (in a new window, perhaps) to get the code. Click on the verification link, and your new “send from” address will be activated.

Several months ago Lifehacker pointed me to a great little application launcher called Launchy. It is fantastic.

Launchy is first of all an application launcher. Hit the default keyboard combination (Alt-spacebar) and a little dialogue box pops up.

Type in the first couple of letters of the application you're looking for and hit enter. The app launches. Launchy automatically indexes your start menu and gives you access to your applications without every touching the mouse. It also indexes your other things, including your control panel. Need to change display settings? Simply type 'display' and launchy will take you there.

There are also some other handy functions built in, like a calculator.

Hit Alt-Spacebar and enter the numbers you want to operate on. Launchy will do the rest. You can check out some other features and screen shots at Tweaking Launchy. You won't want to be without this.
