Muslim father burns Christian daughter alive

Man slices out girl's tongue, ignites her after 'heated debate on religion'

A Saudi Arabian Muslim father cut out his daughter's tongue and lit her on fire upon learning that she had become a Christian.

The child became curious about Jesus Christ after she read Christian material online, the Gulf News reported.

Her father read of her Internet conversation, detached her tongue and burned her to death "following a heated debate on religion," according to an International Christian Concern report.

The father is employed by the muwateen, or Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. The muwateen are police tasked by the government with enforcing religious purity. The man has been taken into custody, and his identity has not been released.

New York Times May Need Dividend Cut to Avoid Junk (Update2)

Aug. 12 (Bloomberg) -- New York Times Co. faces increased financial pressure to cut its dividend as credit quality deteriorates amid record advertising declines.

Bondholders are paying for the decision last year by the Sulzberger family-controlled board to raise the quarterly dividend 31 percent to 23 cents a share. The extra yield investors demand to own New York Times bonds instead of U.S. Treasuries has more than doubled in 2008. The cost to protect the debt against default has climbed 27 basis points since the newspaper publisher posted earnings July 23, meaning investors are betting that credit quality will weaken further.

Moody's Investors Service says one way for New York Times to save its rating, a step above junk and in danger of being cut, would be to reduce the dividend costing $132 million a year.

Loyal dog guards owner for weeks after death

GREELEY, Colorado (AP) -- A dog stood guard over her owner's body for up to six weeks after the man committed suicide on the remote northeastern Colorado plains, authorities said.

The body of 25-year-old Jake Baysinger of La Salle, Colorado, was found Sunday on the Pawnee National Grasslands about 75 miles northeast of Denver, Colorado. Cash, his German shepherd, was found beside him, thin and dehydrated but still alive. The dog had apparently survived by eating mice and rabbits, authorities said.

Sara Baysinger of La Salle, Colorado, and her 2-year-old son, Lane, reunite with their German shepherd, Cash.

The Weld County coroner ruled Baysinger's death a suicide. The cause of death wasn't immediately determined but authorities found a gun nearby, the coroner's office said Tuesday.

Forced marriage victims being betrayed by doctors

Young women fleeing forced marriages are being betrayed by GPs and benefits staff who "collude" with families to return them against their will, a senior police officer police has revealed.

Doctors and Job Centre workers are breaching confidentiality rules and passing on vital information to families, allowing them to trace and punish Asian women who are attempting to escape coerced marriages and "honour"-based domestic violence.

Commander Steve Allen, who is the spokesman on forced marriages for Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), revealed that some doctors have informed girls' families that they have asked for the contraceptive pill, placing them at risk from fathers or brothers who believe this means the family's honour has been besmirched.

RAF flypast for 112th birthday

Europe's oldest man is celebrating his 112th birthday with a flypast from the RAF.

Henry Allingham, who is also the last founding member of the RAF, has been invited to a VIP lunch at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire to witness the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. It will be followed by a parachute drop.

Eight of Mr Allingham's grandchildren and great grandchildren and their partners have flown from their homes in the US for the occasion.

And later this afternoon, 40 pupils from Cranwell Primary School will present him with a birthday cake on what is the 90th anniversary year of the RAF.

Mr Allingham said: "I'm a lucky guy. I am looking forward to a wonderful day and to seeing the family. I just hope I don't let the side down. People ask me how I've done it, and I just say that I look forward to another tomorrow."

Mr Allingham is just one of three known UK survivors from the First World War.

An academic service offering downloadable lectures via iTunes is to be made available to students at University College London, the Open University and Trinity College Dublin.

The move follows similar initiatives in the US where Harvard, Yale, Stanford, UC Berkeley and MIT are already making educational content available via 'iTunes U', a free section of the online music store.

European universities are joining their US counterparts in offering video and audio recordings of lectures from leading academics to students for use on iPods or computers.

"Our students will be able to revisit material presented to them in lectures, so they can learn anywhere and anytime," said Professor Peter Mobbs, of UCL.

UCL is promising downloads about neuroscience, the university's 'lunch time lectures' and a round-up of the latest news.

The Open University, meanwhile, will offer content relating to current courses through 300 audio and video files.

Women charged over Antigua deaths

Two women have been charged in connection with the murders of British honeymooners Ben and Catherine Mullany in Antigua, police there have said.

The pair, aged 32 and 22, appeared before the chief magistrates in St John's, on the Caribbean island.

Police did not give any more details, but the charges are not thought to be directly related to the murders.

The newly-weds, both 31 and from Pontardawe in the Swansea Valley, were shot in their hotel cottage on 28 July.

They were attacked at the Cocos Hotel and Resort in the south west of the island in what police think was a robbery which went wrong on the last day of their honeymoon.

Garry Nelson, the commissioner of the Antiguan Police, said the charges were a "significant development" but that they were still looking for others in connection with the couple's deaths.

"This has taken us where we want to go," he told BBC 5 Live.

A homosexual man who has a blog on Sen. Barack Obama's campaign website is suing two major Christian publishers for violating his constitutional rights and causing emotional pain, because the Bible versions they publish refer to homosexuality as a sin.

Bradley LaShawn Fowler, 39, of Canton, Mich., is seeking $60 million from Zondervan and another $10 million from Thomas Nelson Publishing in lawsuits filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, the Grand Rapids Press reported.

Fowler filed his claim against Grand Rapids-based Zondervan Monday, alleging its Bibles' references to homosexuality as a sin have made him an outcast from his family and contributed to physical discomfort and periods of "demoralization, chaos and bewilderment," the paper said.

Muslim woman too submissive for French citizenship

PARIS -- France has denied citizenship to a veiled Moroccan woman on the grounds that her "radical" practice of Islam is incompatible with basic French values such as equality of the sexes, a legal ruling showed on Friday.

The case will reignite debate about how to reconcile freedom of religion, which is guaranteed by the French constitution, and other fundamental rights, which many in France feel are being challenged by the way of life of some Muslims.

Le Monde newspaper said it was the first time a Muslim applicant had been rejected for reasons to do with personal religious practice.

"She has adopted a radical practice of her religion, incompatible with essential values of the French community, particularly the principle of equality of the sexes," said a ruling by the Council of State handed down last month and sent to Reuters on Friday to confirm a report in Le Monde.

ENVIRONMENTALISTS are under artistic attack again — this time from two Irish film-makers. Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney, producers of a controversial mining documentary that portrayed environmentalists as oppressors, have started an online campaign to raise $3.5m (€2.2m) to secure a cinema release for their latest film, which accuses Al Gore of scaremongering.

The husband and wife team spent 18 months and $1m (€600,000) making Not Evil Just Wrong. It looks at the effects of banning DDT, a chemical used to stop the spread of malaria in the third world, because it was found to be poisonous to wildlife and the environment.

McAleer described environmentalism as something middle-class people did to keep poorer members of society in their place and said their documentary shows the true cost of “global warming hysteria”.
