A UNESCO report on State management of the world heritage site at Skellig Michael off the Kerry coast has found that conservation works have "dramatically altered" the appearance of surviving remains on its South Peak.

However, the 6th century monastic outpost will still retain its "outstanding universal values" intact if the conservation work is documented in an academic publication, the Unesco mission report has found.

The report, due to be released today by the Unesco world heritage committee in Quebec, Canada, has been welcomed by Minister for the Environment John Gormley. He is also publishing the first management plan for Skellig Michael today.

The Unesco study upholds some of the criticisms of State stewardship to date, in recommending that a site manager be appointed. It also says that a "durable agreement" should be negotiated with Skellig Michael ferry operators.

The Canadian Human Rights Commission has dismissed a Muslim group's complaint against Maclean's magazine.

The Canadian Islamic Congress had argued the magazine published an article in October 2006 that would likely expose Muslims to hatred and contempt.

The article, entitled "The Future Belongs to Islam," by Mark Steyn claimed that Muslims are on the verge of dominating Europe and the West because of a demographic shift.

The article claims that their greater numbers will eventually allow Muslims to dominate Western countries. The article goes so far as to quote a European imam who allegedly said Muslims are reproducing like "mosquitoes."

While commentators have said Steyn's demographic claims are way off-base, the CHRC concluded the views in the article, "when considered as a whole and in context, are not of an extreme nature, as defined by the Supreme Court."

On Oct. 23, 2006, Maclean's ran a cover story by Mark Steyn, entitled "Why the Future Belongs to Islam." The piece, excerpted from Steyn's acclaimed book, America Alone, argued that Western legal and political traditions are being eroded by radical elements in the Islamic community who want our societies to more closely reflect Muslim religious values.

We published that story because we felt it was a compelling perspective on significant world events, from one of Canada's most interesting and celebrated journalists. clipper's remarks: I can't say enough about what it's like to experience a Sunday Night @ the Cameron House in Toronto Canada w/Kevin Quain and the MAd Bastards. They put on a show that should cost a lot to see, but they still pass the hat I live in Ireland now so I miss out on the live shows, but his albums are gorgeous.

The loonie topped $1.03 (U.S.) on Friday, driven by surging crude prices and an inflation report that further dimmed the odds of an interest rate cut. The surging Canadian currency climbed as high as $1.0358, its highest level since June, 1974, in the wake of a government report that showed inflation reached a 16-month high. At last check, the loonie was trading at $1.0355, up 85 basis points from Thursday's close of $1.027.
