Atkins IS better than the GI diet at keeping off the pounds, say scientists

Now, scientists may have settled the debate with a study showing that an Atkins-like high protein diet stops slimmers from piling the pounds back on.

In contrast, the popular GI diet, which distinguishes between "good" and "bad" carbohydrates, seems to do nothing to prevent weight from creeping back up.

Professor Arne Astrup, president of the International Association for the Study of Obesity, said results from a study of 250 men and women showed that protein, not carbohydrate, was the key to the battle of the bulge.

Each was asked to follow a selection of diets for six months to work out the best recipe for maintaining weight loss. The diets contained high or low levels of protein, coupled with high or low GI foods.

How the NHS is letting my father die - by a top hospital consultant

Eye specialist Sarah Anderson works at York Hospital. Her father Ian has been refused Sutent, a new cancer drug, which could provide the only real chance of prolonging his life. Sarah, 40, lives in York with husband, Bill, a computer programmer and their twins, Douglas and Ryan, five.

As an ophthalmologist, I have spent my working life in the NHS. And for all its perceived failings, I have been proud of its fundamental role in our society - to provide equality of care for all.

Of course, I've heard the term postcode lottery but as a doctor I've only ever provided my patients with the best course of treatment available.

So when I've read about people being refused particular drugs simply because of where they lived, I've always believed there must be another reason - even if it wasn't immediately obvious at the time.

I never for a moment thought that a life could be decided by something as arbitrary as one's address.

The incest case was discovered when 19-year-old Kerstin fell seriously ill and had to go to the hospital. Her brother, 18-year-old Stefan who had never seen natural light until last month, writes: "I miss my sister. I'm happy about freedom and my family. I like the sun, the fresh air and nature."
