Pope Benedict clears way for Cardinal John Newman to become first English saint in 40 years

Cardinal Newman, the Anglican vicar who shocked Victorian Britain by converting to Roman Catholicism, is a step closer to becoming the first English saint for 40 years.

Pope Benedict XVI yesterday announced the beatification of John Henry Newman, meaning he will be given the title 'Blessed'.

It follows the recognition by the Vatican of the healing of an American man with a severe spinal condition as a miracle which came about as a result of praying to the Cardinal.

A second miracle is needed to recognise Newman as a saint.

Father Paul Chavasse, provost of the Birmingham Oratory, the church that Newman founded, said: 'The Holy Father's decision is one of great significance for the whole Church.'

Benedict XVI has been an admirer of Newman's writings since the 1940s, and is keen to make him a saint and also a theological Doctor of the Church.

Everything suggests that the American bonds seized at Chiasso are real

Official U.S. sources continue to say they are fakes, but there is no news that American experts have inspected them in person. Arrested for another matter, the director of a U.S. radio who says the bonds are real and Japan was trying to sell in Switzerland, not trusting the ability of the United States to honour its debt.

Milan (AsiaNews) – Four weeks have passed since American bonds were confiscated from two Japanese men who were travelling on a direct train to Chiasso, Switzerland, and while there has been clarification of some - very few -points, Italian authorities have remained silent on the rest of the episode.

In addition, a strange coincidence in the timing of the arrest of a director of an internet radio who had made revelations regarding the incident ,increases the already strong oddities surrounding the case.

4:30 pm: My take? If Palin is anything like I think she is (know she is), Obama's treasonous presidency is responsible for this. She, like all patriotic Americans, is shocked by what is happening. Obama is destroying this country. She knows it. We all know it. We need a leader. She is answering our call.

She did not quit. She is going to get into the fight to save America. Watch what happens.

She has common sense, a moral compass and a very definite understanding of good and evil.

We may finally have a chance to see Chairman Zero's birth certificate:

A seller claiming to have a certified copy of Barack Obama's birth certificate issued in a Mombasa, Kenya, hospital in 1961 is back up on eBay telling her story. Six previous times the posts have been removed. …

The seller claims in the latest post on eBay that the birth certificate contains the name of Obama's mother and father, the name of the physician present, along with a signature, and that it is "an exact copy of the original 1961 Mombasa hospital birth certificate. Includes 2009 embossed seal of the hospital in Mombasa. Contains a 2009 signature from staff that issued this copy with embossed seal."

It also allegedly includes a "right footprint." …

Complicating the situation is Obama's decision to spend sums estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars to avoid releasing a state birth certificate that would put to rest all of the questions.

Jim Geraghty is trying to get to the bottom of the over-the-top hate the left feels for Sarah Palin, a hate that seems to intensified, rather than ebbed-away since the election.

It’s a thoughtful piece, and well-worth reading. I think Geraghty gets quite a lot right, particularly as to the left’s rather ignorant perceptions of who and what conservatives are, and he suggests that there is a great deal of complexity to the hate.

The truth is, if Sarah Palin had a “D” after her name, instead of an “R”, they’d adore her,

Put a D after her name, and the story would be completely different

Although, even in that best-of circumstance, there may be something to the idea I wrote a while back, that they hate Sarah Palin because she is not a victim:

And no matter what, she’ll have to deal with a press fully intent on destroying her with a savagery we haven’t seen them use even against Reagan or Bush.

Under Article 40 of the Constitution, “the publication or utterance of blasphemous, seditious, or indecent matter” is a criminal offence.

Mr Ahern insists blasphemy must remain a crime, unless the reference to it in the Constitution is removed. “It is already there in the 1961 Act, and it is in the Constitution and we have to comply with the Constitution. You are in derogation of your duty if you ignore the Constitution,” he told Opposition TDs.

The inclusion of the blasphemy clause was accepted by Government TDs and passed by nine votes to six during yesterday’s committee stage debate.

The change in the €100,000 fine to just €25,000 will be made during next week’s report stage debate.

Islamic countries could retaliate if the DPP did not prosecute some future alleged insult against Islam, he warned.

Describing the Church of Scientology as “a dangerous, crack-pot cult”, Mr O’Keeffe said he could be prosecuted in future if he described it as such outside of Dáil privilege.

“The Jackal Manifesto” started an extended discussion about Hells Angels in Denmark and the role they have assumed as the spearhead of armed ethnic Danish resistance to immigrant violence.

Even in Denmark — which is relatively free of the PC pathology — the mainstream media and polite society recoil in horror from the thought of a biker club targeting immigrant gangs for reprisals. In order to maintain the pristine purity of their ideological posture, they are forced to avert their eyes from what has caused the Hells Angels’ reaction, and from the failure of the civil authorities to address the urgent issue of violent, lawless, unassimilated Muslim immigrants.

But ordinary Danes are not so ready to follow the elite sheep up the ramp into the abattoir. Something primal is awakening in Denmark, something which may well not have stirred since Holger Danske began his long snooze thirteen hundred years ago.

We used not to be like this. We had lives. We did not guard every single bureaucratic regulation with a jealous fury. Once, we might have seen someone jumping a queue and smiled at his brass neck or just thought that perhaps he faced some urgent circumstance.

Once, Ireland was world famous for being a place where everything was not reduced to “ethics” and “equality” and rules.

At the heart of this fundamental change in us, I believe, is the way, over the past decade in particular, the State has begun to bear down on citizens in previously inconceivable ways and dip deeper into our pockets to pay for its incompetent attentions. Gradually, this is driving us mad.

This is just one of the subtle and barely comprehended tyrannies that replaced the old kinds – turning us into moralistic bloodhounds who sniff the air for the scent of sinners.
