But despite the proximity and important interests in play, most Chinese newspaper readers had to content themselves with dry, narrowly drawn and sometimes inaccurate accounts of the events. Absent from the foreign news coverage was independent reporting from the scene or any in-depth analysis that referred to China’s strategic interests in the countries in question.

Only a handful of China’s conservative, state-run publications have permanent bureaus and correspondents in foreign countries. Even publications that use freelance journalists overseas, or that occasionally send out reporters of their own, rely heavily on what foreign publications publish, and carefully avoid delicate subjects.

“By and large, China’s international reporting is a mirror of China’s diplomacy,” said Yu Guoming, a journalism professor at People’s University in Beijing. “As government mouthpieces, their international reports are linked with the government’s diplomacy.

Research: Vitamins may increase risk of death

Taking antioxidants like vitamins A and E to prolong life may actually have the opposite effect, new research has found.

A review of 67 studies involving more than 230,000 people found "no convincing evidence" that the vitamins prolonged life,

"Even more, beta-carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E seem to increase mortality," according to the researchers.

A was linked to a 16% increased risk of dying, beta-carotene to a seven percent increased risk and vitamin E to a four percent increased risk.

We could find no evidence to support taking antioxidant supplements to reduce the risk of dying earlier in healthy people or patients with various diseases.

A Zimbabwean woman harvests pumpkins. Food shortages in the countryside have left many people starving.

“We hitched a ride, closed in like dogs on trucks,” one female farm worker says before adding they have no choice but to roam and scavenge for a job for as little as $3 a month. They say the farm they had been working on wasn’t even paying them enough to buy their own food.

One U.S. dollar is now worth 40 million Zimbabwean dollars.

Aujourd'hui, ce sont ceux qui disent que les chimpanzés n'ont ni émotion ni culture qui sont rejetés."

L'échange de fichiers n'a que des conséquences limitées sur les ventes de disques. L'impact économique est également faible. Même dans les pires hypothèses, cinq mille téléchargements sont nécessaires pour annuler une seule vente d'album

Telles sont les conclusions que Felix Oberholzer et Koleman Strumpf, les auteurs du rapport The Effect of File Sharing on Record Sales ? An Empirical Analysis, tirent sur une étude de 680 albums en vente au cours du second trimestre 2002, et des téléchargements pendant cette même période dans le réseau OpenNap de ces mêmes albums.

De plus, contrairement à d'autres études du même genre, leur rapport démontre que dans le cas des albums les plus populaires, les réseaux P2P augmenteraient même les ventes de CD. (On m'aurait mentiiii ?)

Dans une moindre mesure, c'est aussi ce qu'affirme Rodolphe Buet, directeur du disque à la FNAC : "l'internet n'a pas à être diabolisé, dit-il, c'est le CD qui a pris un coup de vieux".

A new study in the Journal of Political Economy by Felix Oberholzer-Gee and Koleman Strumpf has found that illegal music downloads have had no noticeable effects on the sale of music, contrary to the claims of the recording industry.

Entitled "The Effect of File Sharing on Record Sales: An Empirical Analysis," the study matched an extensive sample of music downloads to American music sales data in order to search for causality between illicit downloading and album sales. Analyzing data from the final four months of 2002, the researchers estimated that P2P affected no more than 0.7% of sales in that timeframe.
