The name is official now: Nuremberg's polar bear baby will keep the name its carers in Nuremberg Zoo have used for their charge right from the beginning: "Flocke" (snow flake).

In the early years of the last century, Antarctica was the last great goal for explorers, who raced each other to be the first to reach the South Pole. Their legacy remains to this day in the form of the pre-fabricated huts used as bases for their journeys, and the possessions they left behind in them.

Antarctica's harsh environment has preserved these huts so far, but they are now in urgent need of care. In a world-first for conservation, conservators are spending the Antarctic winter in 24-hour darkness working on the restoration of the hut built by Ernest Shackleton for his 1908 expedition.

Floyd Red Crow Westerman, a U.S. aboriginal activist, actor and folksinger who appeared in the movie Dances with Wolves and performed with Willie Nelson and other musicians, has died. He was 71.

A respected musician, Westerman worked with Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Harry Belafonte, Jackson Browne and others. His debut album, released in 1970, was titled Custer Died For Your Sins. Last year he released A Tribute to Johnny Cash to positive reviews.

He was an activist for environmental causes and for the rights of Native Americans and other indigenous people. In the 1990s, Westerman toured the world with Sting to raise money to preserve rain forests.
