As someone who gets antsy if she hasn’t touched her phone in the past 30 seconds, I’m interested to see where this goes and how it looks once it’s implemented. When and if Hulu is available on my iPhone, you may see me on the bus or the train in Boston, giggling at Michael Scott or gasping at Jack Bauer.

Now I know not everyone likes Hulu, and some prefer other online video sites like Joost and Fancast. If you want to watch TV shows or movies online, where do you go? What do you think of Hulu now, and what value might the service bring to your mobile content consumption?

Tags: social honeycomb, hulu, online video, tv, movies, joost, fancast, web 2.0

<clipSource>http://socialhoneycomb.com/i-hulu-do-you</clipSource>

Social Aggregators: FriendFeed vs. Socialthing!

clipped by: AmandaGravel

Clip Source: socialhoneycomb.com

I recently got a Socialthing! invite from modern journalist and friend Brad King and signed up for FriendFeed at the same time. I’ve been using these two services side by side to see what I think and get a flavor for what the buzz is about.

The thing is, I’m not sure that I even like mixing up all my networks in one place, even though social aggregators are so hot right now.

There’s something familiar and comfortable about going to each distinct site to find that separate content. I know what to expect from each different network and they’ve all become like favorite hangout spots for me. These social communities are not just about contributing and absorbing the content my friends are creating, but about the experience of going to a comfy, cozy place I’ve come to enjoy.

Tags: friendfeed, socialthing!, social aggregator, rss, social honeycomb, web 2.0, social media, lifestream

<clipSource>http://socialhoneycomb.com/socialthing-friendfeed</clipSource>

Students + Cameras + Community = Press Pass TV

clipped by: AmandaGravel
clipper's remarks: A post at Social Honeycomb.

Clip Source: socialhoneycomb.com

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Boston Public School teacher Gabriel Mugar, who is the founder of Press Pass TV, a group started in 2004 to work with local middle and high school students on the production of civic-minded video journalism.

The idea behind PPTV is to promote positive community identity and engagement in both the viewers and the student producers. These local kids are using their talents to communicate with the world around them in new and positive ways. I think Gabriel’s group is inspiring and very much in line with my view of creating a stronger, brighter, fuller future in the communities we find around us.

I am looking forward to seeing these students develop the program and use new media tools to inspire and communicate with their viewers. It’s great to see kids building on interests and talents to bring something new to the table when it comes to media, news and content creation.

Tags: press pass tv, pptv, boston public schools, gabriel mugar, civic journalism, video journalism, content creation, the future, students, volunteer

<clipSource>http://socialhoneycomb.com/press-pass-tv</clipSource>

PicLens is Enhancing My Photo Viewing Experience

clipped by: AmandaGravel
clipper's remarks: A post at Social Honeycomb.

Clip Source: socialhoneycomb.com

Social media evangelist and friend Bryan Person (formerly known as Bryper) recently turned me on to the Web browser add-on PicLens. I’m generally a fan of toolbars, buttons and widgets that make things flashier and/or easier to use, so I checked it out. As someone who takes a lot of pictures and finds herself turning up in a lot of pictures on the Web, I was curious to see what this app could do. And I agree with earlier reviews–it’s pretty special.

So, say you clicked on a friend’s profile photo within Facebook. PicLens now takes you to what they call a “3D Wall” of photos related to the one you clicked–in this case, your friend’s other photos in the album. From there, you can zip around, look at things up close, play a slideshow, search for keywords and generally have a very rich photo viewing experience.

Tags: amanda gravel, piclens, cooliris, photos, photo sharing, firefox add-ons, social media, web 2.0

<clipSource>http://socialhoneycomb.com/piclens-photo-viewing</clipSource>

The Night Geoff Livingston Partially Took Off His Shirt

clipped by: AmandaGravel
clipper's remarks: A post at Social Honeycomb.

Clip Source: socialhoneycomb.com

You’d think that a girl who just graduated from college would easily be able to out-party a bunch of seasoned marketing pros, right? What is interesting to me is that the new definitions sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter are creating seem to be spilling over into everyday life (yes, outside of social networks). Variations like “de-friend” “friend me!” and “friend request” aren’t just buzzwords on social sites–I hear them spoken aloud all the time.

These are some pretty good definitions, I think. But I’m not sure what a friend REALLY is anymore–all I know is that the word “friend” has been distorted because of social networks and it is often used in ways that do not reflect what we all grew up believing friendship to mean. It’s not a bad thing, necessarily–just different meanings for an old word.

Tags: amanda gravel, social honeycomb, social media vocab, meaning of the word friend, friendship, de-friend, twitter, new definitions

<clipSource>http://socialhoneycomb.com/friend</clipSource>

A PR Girl Gets Ink(ed) or Amanda Goes to the Tattoo Parlor

clipped by: AmandaGravel
clipper's remarks: A post at Social Honeycomb.

Clip Source: socialhoneycomb.com

My tattoo is a reminder to acknowledge that the future is inevitably and continually about to happen, so I should prepare for and influence it as best I can to achieve the outcomes I desire of it.

My tattoo is a reminder to demand and create the future I hope for and expect in myself and the world around me.

My tattoo is a reminder to help others along the way as we each move toward our own futures that are undeniably strengthened by our collective, connected success.

As my Grade-A new friend Alexa Scordato pointed out today, “The placement of your tattoo is perfect. Full of people who are connecting for a purpose and open to meeting like-minded or interested individuals who understand why they’re there in the first place.

As a (structural functionalist) sociological thinker, I can look at social networks as nebulous, fragmented subgroups integrating themselves into the societal population on the Web in meaningful ways. It’s the idea of organic holism–each network is a functional organ in the overall body of the social Web.

If we combine these two ideas, I think we get something really powerful. Function, connectedness, purpose, opportunity. The more we understand and live up to the social, human aspects of public relations on the Web, the bigger and better our opportunities will become.

Tags: sociology, public relations, sociological public relations, community, organic holism, social web

<clipSource>http://socialhoneycomb.com/sociological-publicrelations</clipSource>

All My Yum-Yums in One Place: How I Use Del.icio.us

clipped by: AmandaGravel
clipper's remarks: A post from Social Honeycomb.

Clip Source: mashable.com

I use my del.icio.us account as a Web portfolio–a place where an interested follower, client, friend or employer can easily see what I do on the Web in an easy, one-stop-shop format.

As you build your career and your reputation, I recommend creating a purpose-built personal del.icio.us page as a public portfolio of who you are on the Web. If I had a professor who banned her students from using Google or Wikipedia as sources of information or avenues for research, I would have dropped the class, no question. She's have horrible ratings on ratemyprofessor.com and I doubt that many students would sign up for her class in the future.

So, I'm glad I didn't go to this school or have this professor, because I would have failed. Big time. I'm that girl who went to the library twice throughout my entire stint in college. Come on, profs- embrace reality.

Clip Source: mashable.com

University Of Brighton Professor Places Ban On Google And Wikipedia

University of Brighton professor Tara Brabazon claims that students have grown too accustomed to taking “the easy option when asked to do research.” The easy options being the popular Web reference Wikipedia and that quaint, mischievous little search engine known as Google. And she has now supposedly disallowed any students currently partaking in her course(s) from using any of the two utilities.

A number of specialists in certain fields of study – be it history, literature, science, etc. – see the open source landscape of the Web and are frightened. They see chaos. They see so many variables, and so many loose ends, that it appears unsafe to them. So they revert to the trusted resources of years past and completely discount anything new and “officially unapproved.”

<clipSource>http://mashable.com/2008/01/13/university-of-brighton-professor-places-ban-on-google-and-wikipedia/</clipSource>

Greg Narian, Chris Penn and Andrea Vascellari Give Their Picks for the MMNP of 2007Launch PR,

clipped by: AmandaGravel

Clip Source: launchpr.typepad.com

The team at Schneider Associates has partnered with comScore, IRI and BNP’s New Product Magazine to survey more than 1,000 consumers across the country and reveal the most memorable new product launches of 2007 and highlight the latest trends in consumer behavior.

Greg Narian

Greg’s 2007 Most Memorable New Product Launch Picks: Halo 3, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows
