Stepping up the development of the Second Life Grid to everyone interested, I am proud to announce the availability of the Second Life client source code for you to download, inspect, compile, modify, and use within the guidelines of the GNU GPL version 2.

Releasing the source now is our next invitation to the world to help build this global space for communication, business, and entertainment. We are eager to work with the community and businesses to further our vision of our space.

World's tallest man saves dolphin

Mongolian herdsman Bao Xishun was called in after the dolphins swallowed plastic used around their pool at an aquarium in Fushun, north-east China.

The heads of the dolphins were held back and towels wrapped around their teeth so Mr Bao could not be bitten.

Maurice Johnson, a freshman studying interior design at Harcum College, spends hours each day online, both for work and play. One thing he rarely does, though, is open his campus e-mail account.

A 2005 report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project called "Teens and Technology" found that teenagers preferred new technology, like instant messaging or text messaging, for talking to friends and use e-mail to communicate with "old people." Along the same lines, students interviewed for this article say they still depend on e-mail to communicate with their professors. But many of the students say they would rather send text messages to friends, to reach them wherever they are, than send e-mail messages that might not be seen until hours later.

Best Blogs of 2006 that You (Maybe) Aren't Reading

Caveat: no human on the planet is qualified to do this, and the 500 blogs that I follow probably represents how many blogs are created in a second.¹ On the other hand, this is not a list of esoteric blogs that you'll smirk at and never read again. I actually read all of these, because I think they're great.

27. T-Shirt Critic
I've got this theory that the t-shirt is becoming its own legitimate form of media -- informative yet dispensable. Probably the most frequent email query I get is "where do you get all those t-shirt links?" The answer is all over the freaking place -- but this site is one of the best. It can act as an input to a number of (free, open source) applications, some especially created for sampling and sequencing, or can control midi applications. There are Java libraries and everything. I own one, and can't get enough of it.

clipper's remarks: I like job titles that make you do a double-take. I recently spotted this in the Beeb online. These types of articles are becoming more common; I can't imagine it's too long before the novelty wears off and they become ubiquitously meshed yet valuable, like what Steve Jobs thinks of Levi jeans.

From an insider perspective (I work for Linden Lab), I should note how dapper Roo aka Algernon looks, and how unique his head is shaped: you'll often not find prominent eyebrows like that in Second Life, especially paired with big blue eyes and a teardrop-shaped head not unlike that of a classic Gray alien. Lots of room for avatar customization, that's for sure.

Just another day in the office

"Metaverse Evangelist" is not a title you expect to see on a business card, let alone one from an employee of a century-old technology company.

But then Roo Reynolds of IBM is not a normal employee.

Living a double life, one as a twenty-something software engineer and the other as an online four-foot alien, Mr Reynolds flits between dusty wood-panelled meeting rooms and anything-goes virtual worlds like Second Life and Entropia Universe.

His job since March 2006 has been to preach the gospel of the online 3D universe to IBM executives and the company's clients.
