readymade did a DIY version.
ingredients: clear 2-liter plastic bottle, 350 12″ bamboo skewers, and 2 cups of salt, sugar or sand
tools: utility knife, and ruler
directions:
1. remove the bottle’s label and cut off the top of the bottle so that it measures 10.5″ tall.
2. fill the bottle’s bottom with about 2 cups of salt, sugar, or sand.
3. pack the bamboo skewers sharp ends down until the bottle is full and tight.
4. gently stab your knives into the bamboo.

i might actually do this one!
except i may exchange the bottle for something made of glass
from my favorite store: goodwill.

Apple and Cinnamon Sling

1½ oz vodka
¼ oz Berentzen's "Apfel Korn" Apple Schnapps
2 oz fresh apple cider (the cloudy sort)
2 oz guava juice (strained)

Build over ice in a tall glass and stir. Top with cinnamon foam (made in separate glass): 1 egg white; 2 oz apple juice; 3 tsp cinnamon; 3 tsp cinnamon sugar; 3 tsp Angostura bitters. Fully dissolve cinnamon and sugar in juice. Add egg white and Angostura. Swizzle-whisk ingredients into a frothy foam.

Sweet Potatoes

Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes with Ricotta

3 medium sweet potatoes (2 to 2 1/2 lbs.)
1 tsp olive oil
2 shallots, finely chopped
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/2 cup fat-free ricotta cheese
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1 tbsp brown sugar
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (plus more for garnish)
2 1/2 tbsp chopped fresh sage leaves (plus more for garnish)

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Pierce potatoes with a fork several times and place on a foil-lined baking sheet. Bake until they're soft and when pierced with a knife, about 1 hour.

Remove and let cool about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a small nonstick skillet and add shallots. Cook until soft and just browning. Transfer to a bowl and set aside.

When cool enough to handle, cut potatoes in half, lengthwise. Use a spoon or melon baller to scoop out the flesh, leaving 1/4 inch around the skin edges for stability.

Put all potato flesh int the bowl of a food processor or a blender and process just until smooth, about 20 seconds. Add salt, pepper, ricotta, ginger and brown sugar and puree until smooth.

With a spoon, stir in Parmesan cheese, sage and cooked shallots. Spoon puree into potato shells, or put the mixture into a large zipper-style plastic bag. Cut off a corner of the bag and gently squeeze mixture into shells.

Set oven temperature to 350 degrees. Sprinkle each potato half with a little Parmesan cheese and sage leaves if desired, and bake until heated through, about 30 minutes.

Per serving: 182 calories, 2 g fat (1 g sat), 34 g carbs, 7 g protein, 5 g fiber, 252 mg sodium

Strawberry Crepes

Strawberry Crepes

Crepe Batter:
2 eggs
1/8 tsp. salt
1 c. flour
1 1/8 c. milk
1/8 c. melted butter

Filling:
2 pts. strawberries
1/3 c. sugar
8 oz. cream cheese
1 c. powdered sugar
2-3 tbs. rum

For the crepes: In medium bowl, combine eggs and salt. Gradually add flour alternately with milk, beating until smooth. Beat in melted butter. Refrigerate batter at least 1 hour. Cok in lightly greased skillet 30 seconds on each side. Remove from pan and layer with paper towels.

For Filling: Hull and slice berries. Sprinkle 1/3 c. sugar over berries and set aside for an hour. Beat cream cheese and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in rum and berries. Fill each crepe with mixture then fold or roll. Spoon extra strawberry mixture over top. Serves 12.

Loft Bed Assembly

Once you have fabricated the pieces, the OP Loftbed is ready to be assembled. It is a good idea to leave all the hardware slightly loose while assembling. After everything is assembled, you should go back and make sure that everything is tight.

All hardware assembly will have a flat washer between the bolt head and the first board. The other end will have a flat washer against the board, a lock washer, and then the wing nut.
Start assembly with the tall legs, short horizontal braces and short x-brace pieces. This will be the head of the bed.
Lift the assembled pieces and prop them against the wall. Make sure that it will not fall.
Assemble the short legs and steps.
Partially lift the short leg assembly and fasten one long mattress support.
Lift the free end of the long mattress support and fasten it to the long leg assembly. Fasten the long x-braces and long horizontal brace before adding the remaining pieces. (Note: For short height loft bed only: refer to step 6 of the short height fabrication instructions for information about attaching the angle braces.)
The headboard/shelf can be installed in the lower section or at the top of the bed. Or you could make two headboard/shelves and have them at both locations.
Finish the assembly with the cross-piece and plywood mattress support pieces.
Congratulations, you have just finished assembling your OP Loftbed!

Idea killers: ways to stop ideas

Last week in the creative thinking course I’m teaching at UW, we spent time listing idea killers. Statements we’ve heard, or used, that stop ideas in their tracks. Have any to add?

Mostly these are used as thought inhibitors: they don’t require any thought to say. They’re used as flinch negative responses, dismissing without explanation. Unlike real critical thinking, which offers a path (e.g if you can overcome x, y and z we’ll consider it) idea killers are lazy dead ends.

Idea Killers

We will actively work against you

HOW TO Quickie: Embedded Flickr Slideshows

Dig those flash Flickr slideshows? All that’s needed is a bit of code to embed them within your website to give your readers something dynamic.

Place this somewhere on your website or within a blog post. Change user_id from 12345678@N00 to your flickr id, which you can find out with this idgettr. Also replace foo with the tags of the photos you wish to display.

Other parameters include the following:

text=
tag_mode=
favorites=
group_id=
frifam=
nsid=
single=
firstIndex=
set_id=
firstId=

For those wondering how I came up with all of this, it was no more than some determined API investigation. If you want to use one of these extra parameters just add it after your user_id with a separating ampersand (&). Don’t forget to subscribe to my RSS feed on your way out. And for those wondering, there is no way to adjust the size of the flash slideshow as it is fixed in size and hosted on flickr. If you are looking for a different type of flickr photo integration, check out Diego’s pictobrowser.
