clipper's remarks: I haven't posted anything about this up until now because I had to give myself time to get used to the idea... get over the shock. It looks as though the motivation behind this is to enhance msnbc.com, not to change Newsvine into anything it isn't right now. And it looks as if msnbc.com publisher and president Charlie Tillinghast is well aware and sensitive to the concerns of the Newsvine community.

I'm still not sure what to think, but I am hopeful because I think Newsvine is now on sound financial footing, and that's a good thing. Still, even in this state of shock I'm still in, I almost feel like dancing... we've hit the big time and that's very, very cool. And I am proud to be a part of such a vibrant community and news site.

MSNBC.com, the joint venture of Microsoft and NBC, is purchasing Newsvine, a startup that enlists "citizen" journalists to post and comment on mainstream media stories, and write articles of their own.

It's the first acquisition in Redmond-based MSNBC.com's 11-year history. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Newsvine's investors, who were happy about the deal, put up $1.5 million to get the service going two years ago.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Mr. Rove (in his last hoorah?) specifically timed the announcement of the resignation for when Mssrs. Stewart, Colbert, Froomkin, and Sullivan are all on vacation (and the timing of Roll Call’s publication is very, very suspicious as well). Who can put anything past these guys, nowadays?

Also: A.G. A.G. (never get tired of that) will resign on Constitution Day (which is Sept. 17th). One might even think that someone in the DoJ (whoever schedules official hand-overs) specifically planned it this way, knowing that Mssrs. Bush, Gonzales, et. al. would never have even heard of Constitution Day. Or this is simply another signal of the End of the Age of Irony I’ve heard so much about.

The sabre-rattling rhetoric about "containing Iran" has escalated to the point where both political parties and practically the whole US Press corps accept it as legitimate and, in fact, honourable, that "all options are on the table," to quote the leading presidential candidates — possibly even nuclear weapons. "All options on the table" means that Washington is threatening war. The UN Charter outlaws "the threat or use of force." The United States, which has chosen to become an outlaw state, disregards international laws and norms. We're allowed to threaten anybody we want — and to attack anybody we want.

Iran resists US or Israeli domination of the Middle East but scarcely poses a military threat.

The ACLU said it is clear from the manual that the aim of the White House policy is to keep people who are critical of the president away from him and from the news media. According to the manual, "if it is determined that the media will not see or hear" demonstrators, then event staff can ignore them. The manual's guidelines are designed for use at all presidential events, not just fundraisers or political rallies. However, the ACLU noted that there are stricter constitutional guidelines for taxpayer-funded events than for privately- or politically-funded events.

"When the president attends a public event, the First Amendment does not allow him to speak or listen only to those who agree with him," said Arthur Spitzer, Legal Director of the ACLU of the National Capital Area and co-counsel in the lawsuit. "Public places cannot be 'cleansed' of all dissent just to make the president look popular on television."
