Google has launched its ocean application in Google Earth, allowing users to dive into view 3D sections of selected sea bed areas. The feature also marks out marine protected areas and includes information and pictures of places such as Devon's Lundy Island and dive sites of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia and Egyptian Red Sea.

Google Ocean, which is now part of Google Earth, will allow users to watch marine life videos and historical footage, access wreck information and contribute their own photographs. Much of the information featured is conservation-focused. UK charity the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is one of the partners of Ocean on Google Earth.

Leaping Manta Ray

A leaping manta ray (Manta birostris) seems to fly above the Gulf of California off the coast of Mexico. Mantas, easily recognizable by their pectoral "wings," stay near the ocean's surface, unlike other rays. They leap—up to seven feet (two meters) high—then return to the surface with a resounding slap.

August 4, 2008—Identified as a new species only in 2005, the bulbous-headed snub fin dolphin—called the world's ugliest—had never been filmed until now, according to an Australian TV production.

New Manta Ray Species Discovered, Expert Says

What scientists call the manta ray is actually at least two distinct species with unique behaviors and lifestyles, a scientist announced recently.

Little is known about a second, larger species that avoids contact with humans and seems to have wider migration patterns. It also has evolutionary remnants of a spine and a harmless, nonstinging barb on its tail.

Manta rays are graceful giants in the ray family that can weigh over 4,400 pounds (2,000 kilograms).

The smaller rays—familiar to divers in Hawaii, the Maldives, Mozambique, Australia, and Japan—are year-round residents of certain marine spots, such as coral reefs.

Scientists suspect the larger, more mysterious, rays are highly migratory animals that wander the world's seas.

Rare seahorses born at aquarium

More than 120 endangered baby seahorses have been born at a Hampshire aquarium.

It is the male seahorse that carries and gives birth to the babies

There are about 34 species of seahorse in the world and virtually all of them are under threat from loss of habitat, pollution, the souvenir trade and traditional Far East medicine, which is thought to account for the deaths of more than 20 million seahorses every year.
