he music video may hardly be in top cultural form at the moment, with both the channels previously known as Music Television and Video Hits 1st becoming bigger misnomers by the day. But even if these previously monolithic video outlets don’t seem to care too much about spreading the gospel anymore, in actuality, possibilities for video watching are arguably greater than ever. Deluxe cable channels like MTV Jams and VH-1 Classic are living up to the 24-hour-a-day music promises previously made by their parent channels, and with larger and more diverse playlists than ever before. And far more miraculously, with the advent of YouTube, video freaks finally have the capabilities to view almost any video they want, whenever they want. Music video democracy is at an all-time high.

With that in mind, we here at Stylus have democratically selected our humble and largely unofficial picks for the 100 best videos ever made, and are presenting them here, fully equipped with YouTube links for your viewing pleasure. Our list spans over four decades of music videos, from Bob Dylan & D.A. Pennebacker’s arguable creation of the art form in 1965 right up to a barely month-old Hot Chip video by Garth Jennings. We’ll be unveiling 20 a day, so be sure to check back throughout the week to keep up. Relive some of your favorite music video memories, and hopefully make a few new ones as well, as we count down the greatest hits of the music video medium.

Three 6 Mafia say they weren't stunting when they were seen in Los Angeles carrying their Oscar around with them everywhere for two straight weeks. They were just being cautious.

"We was in L.A. for two weeks and we didn't get a chance to go home," Juicy J explained during a trip to NYC last week. "So we had to carry the Oscar everywhere we went because they said we should get insurance for it because somebody might try to take it or rob you for it. It's gold. It weighs eight and a half pounds."

The Juice says rolling with Oscar paid off immediately.

"I couldn't get in a club, so I pulled out the Oscar and they let me right in," he revealed with a chuckle. "When I got back to Memphis, I put the Oscar in a fireproof safe. So if you try to burn the house down, you can't burn the Oscar."

Three 6's homies weren't fazed by the group winning such a prestigious award. Heck, some of them didn't even know what exactly the Mafia won.

"A lot of my friends don't even know what an Academy Award is," Juicy said. "They thought I won a Grammy. I said, 'N---a, you crazy. This is an Oscar, one of the biggest awards you can get.' " ...

Tags: three 6 mafia, three6mafia, 36mafia, juicy j, dj paul, crunchy black, hiphop, hip hop, rap, gold, oscars, academy awards

<clipSource>http://www.mtv.com/bands/m/mixtape_monday/032806/?_requestid=204210</clipSource>

Typographic Tribute to Biggie Smalls

clipped by: Activator
clipper's remarks: Animated with his own lyrics, no less. But after just a brief career in the spotlight, he died Friday at age 32 after battling an incurable blood disease and lupus.

The young producer's reputation for bare-bones, "old-school" production and rap styles earned him quick respect in the hip-hop community during the last six years. But his exposure to music came much earlier.

His mother Maureen Yancey, a former opera singer, says her husband was a jazz bassist and their home was filled with music. So it was no surprise when she saw in her son the first signs of a budding disc jockey.

"Dilla's interest in music started at age 2," his mother says. "Dilla carried 45s on his arm and turntables to the park every day, to spin records -- and this was in downtown Detroit."

Yancey got his start working in the studio for A Tribe Called Quest. When his own rap trio Slum Village found a hit with their album Fantastic, Vol. 2, Yancey quickly became one of hip-hop's most sought-after producers.

Tags: jay
