Behold the double standard: John McCain sought out the endorsement of John Hagee, the war-mongering Catholic-bashing Texas preacher who said the people of New Orleans got what they deserved for their sins. But no one suggests McCain shares Hagee's delusions, or thinks AIDS is God's punishment for homosexuality. Pat Robertson called for the assassination of a foreign head of state and asked God to remove Supreme Court justices, yet he remains a force in the Republican religious right. After 9/11 Jerry Falwell said the attack was God's judgment on America for having been driven out of our schools and the public square, but when McCain goes after the endorsement of the preacher he once condemned as an agent of intolerance, the press gives him a pass.

Am I really going to link the unhinged Larry Johnson?

Yes I am.

He's not saying much more than I did before: Jeremiah Wright's "Christianity" isn't really Christianity, it's Farrakhan's Nation of Islam with the serial numbers filed off and "Mohammad" swapped out for "Jesus."

But he's a liberal, so he's allowed to say it. And there's actually a chance someone in the media might consider that obvious point worth pursuing.

And, Oh: Jim Geraghty on liberals, whom are irony-proofed right at the factory at no extra charge. Regarding Obama's denigration of small-town Americans as only "clinging" to religion due to frustration:

Boy, I'd hate for people to get bitter, and to cling to antipathy to people who aren't like them because of, say, a religious leader... You know, somebody preaching hate from the pulpit or something like that. Good thing Barack Obama is always on top of circumstances like that, and would never stand for that...

The monster in which they’ve been so accustomed to taming – has apparently taken on such gargantuan proportion that it is now becoming acutely unmanageable. The seeds of hyperinflation are slowly taking root, and may soon begin to expose themselves to the populace, and spread unabated. Unless our monetary and political stewards begin taking immediate steps toward fostering the adoption of a sustainable, pro-active, fiscally sound and transparent set of practical transitional protocols to construct a NEW sustainable system of money and credit – the current generation will no doubt, be bearing witness in their lifetimes, to an epic paradigm shift reaching critical mass – resulting in a 21st Century revolution to abolish and supplant the present fiat-currency system of money and credit.

A young man, a student of journalism, is sentenced to death by an Islamic court for downloading a report from the internet. The sentence is then upheld by the country's rulers. This is Afghanistan – not in Taliban times but six years after "liberation" and under the democratic rule of the West's ally Hamid Karzai.

Mr Kambaksh, 23, distributed the tract to fellow students and teachers at Balkh University with the aim, he said, of provoking a debate on the matter. But a complaint was made against him and he was arrested, tried by religious judges without – say his friends and family – being allowed legal representation and sentenced to death.

The Independent is launching a campaign today to secure justice for Mr Kambaksh. The UN, human rights groups, journalists' organisations and Western diplomats have urged Mr Karzai's government to intervene and free him. But the Afghan Senate passed a motion yesterday confirming the death sentence.

Some business leaders are drifting away from the party because of the war in Iraq, the growing federal debt and a conservative social agenda they don't share. In manufacturing sectors such as the auto industry, some Republicans want direct government help with soaring health-care costs, which Republicans in Washington have been reluctant to provide. And some business people want more government action on global warming, arguing that a bolder plan is not only inevitable, but could spur new industries.

"We've lost control of spending," and the administration's execution of the Iraq war has been "incompetent." Mr. Clinch says he is liberal about rights for women and gays, and vexed that "we [Republicans] get sidetracked on these issues like gay marriage."

Overall, Democratic presidential candidates have raised more than $200 million this year, about 70% more than their Republican rivals.

Rush Limbaugh's Historical Ignorance

Like many other Christian nation apologists, he wants to equate support for separation of church and state with hostility toward religion, which is absolutely false. As I've pointed out many times, some of the staunchest defenders of church/state separation were Baptist ministers like John Leland and Isaac Backus. That Jefferson believed in God has nothing at all to do with the kind of separation of church and state he advocated.

Vitter secures $100K for Louisiana anti-evolution group

Religous conservatives receiving funds have political ties to embattled senator

In a move ostensibly aimed at providing "better science education" in Louisiana schools, Sen. David Vitter has secured $100,000 in taxpayer dollars to fund an anti-evolution effort spearheaded by a religious group politically connected to the alleged prostitute-soliciting Republican.

Despite Vitter's admission earlier this year that he used a Washington, DC, call-girl service and allegations that he frequented prostitutes in New Orleans, the first-term Republican has maintained the support of religious conservatives in his home state.

"Dan Richey, the group's grass-roots coordinator, was paid $17,250 as a consultant in Vitter's 2004 Senate race," according to the newspaper. "Records also show that Vitter's campaign employed Beryl Amedée, the education resource council chairwoman for the Louisiana Family Forum."
