The ban on poppy farming in Afghanistan may hamper the heroin trade but it also leaves farmers in poverty.

Kate Clark meets one who has had to negotiate the betrothal of his six-year-old daughter to pay a debt.

In a country without banks, opium is the standard way to get a loan.

The ban means he is having to grow low-value wheat.

And because he is landless, his only asset is his female children.

He has already exchanged two daughters for debt and now the youngest has wiped off a further £1,000 ($2,000) worth, a huge amount of money in rural Afghanistan.

Did he not feel any shame, I asked, about marrying off his six-year-old?

No, he said, the real shame would have been to have his creditors knocking at his door, embarrassing him in front of the village.

Your daughter, I persisted, how does she feel?

"Oh, she's happy to be solving her father's problems," he said.

Teenager from faith-healing family dies in Oregon

GLADSTONE, Ore. - Authorities say a teenager from a faith-healing family died from an illness that could have been easily treated, just a few months after a toddler cousin of his died in a case that has led to criminal charges.

Tuesday's death of 16-year-old Neil Beagley, however, may not be a crime because Oregon law allows minors 14 and older to decide for themselves whether to accept medical treatment.

Nelson said a catheter would have saved the boy's life. If the condition had been dealt with earlier, a urologist could easily have removed the blockage and avoided the kidney damage that came with the repeated illnesses, Nelson said.

Benton said a board member of the Followers of Christ church contacted the authorities after Beagley died at his family's home. The teen had been sick about a week, and church members and his family had gathered to pray Sunday when his condition worsened, Benton said.

FRANKFURT, Germany (Associated Press) -- The dollar fell against the euro Thursday as oil prices looked set to rise on reports of a Nigerian oil field attack.

Olav Ljosne, a spokesman for Royal Dutch Shell confirmed an attack, but gave no details. He said production had been stopped from the field, which normally produces about 200,000 barrels of crude per day.

The British pound rose to $1.9622 from $1.9569, while the dollar slipped to 107.50 Japanese yen from 107.99 yen in New York late Wednesday.

NEW YORK (Associated Press) -- Two former Bear Stearns managers have been arrested, federal authorities said Thursday, becoming the first executives to face criminal charges related to the collapse of the subprime mortgage market.

The former executives are suspected of misleading investors about the risky subprime mortgage market, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the outcome of the investigation is pending.

Cioffi, 52, and Tannin, 46, already have been named in lawsuits brought last year by hedge fund investors, including Barclays Bank PLC, who allege they were purposely misled.

Last month, Bear Stearns shareholders approved JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s $2.2 billion buyout at about $10 a share. Back in January 2007, before mortgage defaults began clobbering banks and draining demand from the debt markets, Bear Stearns had traded at $171 a share.

The first thing you have to understand about the movie, "Iron Man," is that it is based on a super hero comic book series. For those of you who are not aware, super hero comic books are cartoon-style magazines read by effeminate young boys who don't play sports. I'm going to put it bluntly - and ladies, close your ears now, or ask your husband later - comic book readers are given toward a lifestyle of masturbation directed toward men wearing leotards. Thankfully, in a civilized society, these little perverts are not able to fulfill their disgusting fantasies in our school gymnasiums unless, of course, they are attending school in England, where boys learn to prance about like homosexuals in the first grade!
