Christian faith-healer Joe Daugherty died of cancer on November 22, 2009.

In October Mr. Daugherty was admitted to the hospital for a viral infection of his throat. However, tests showed he was suffering from non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Why he sought medical help and did not rely on the Christian teachings which he promoted regarding faith-healing is not clear. One of the statements in his church's Statement of Faith reads, "We believe that deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement, and is the privilege of all believers. (Isa. 53:4, Matt. 8:16-17, Mark 16:18, John 5:6-14, 1 Peter 2:24)"

Student Suspended for Cancer Head Shave

A 15-YEAR-old Brisbane schoolgirl was suspended for shaving her head to raise money for vital cancer research

her father is battling leukemia.

He underwent a bone marrow transplant a few weeks ago but has been given only a few months to live.

Ms Pridham decided to shave her head as part of a fundraiser for cancer research.

"Basically my way of coping is to try and help other people going through the same thing," she said.

Ms Pridham said she has been banned from Mount Alvernia College until her hair grows back.

Barbara Pridham said she supports her daughter's fundraising decision.

"I am just appalled that she could be suspended by a Catholic school that promotes joy, respect and community spirit," she said.

Mount Alvernia College released a statement to Channel Nine News that said Ms Pridham had breached the college's uniform guidelines and had been suspended because of "ongoing issues".

This is happening at a small church in the town my father was born and grew up in, Canton, N.C. Also, this is just another example of Christians against Christians, one declaring to have superior and divine knowledge of the “true word” via the King James Bible. All other translations of the Bible are “of the devil”, according to Pastor Marc Grizzard. One woman interviewed says “In my opinion, the King James version is the only version.” These folks are showing their total lack of knowledge concerning the Bible’s history (amongst other things).

The “wrong” versions of the Bible are not the only books being burned. Books of many Christian authors are also on the burn list, including the Rev. Billy Graham, Dr. James Dobson, Mother Theresa, Rick Warren, Tim LaHaye. This just goes to show us, eventually the Christians will but themselves out of business by fighting amongst themselves.

PHILADELPHIA – A fundamentalist couple who prayed over their sick toddler rather than get medical help before his pneumonia death have been ordered to stand trial on manslaughter charges.

Prosecutors believe 2-year-old Kent Schaible succumbed because his parents chose prayer over modern medicine.

The Schaibles, who quit school after ninth grade, work as teachers at their church, First Century Gospel Church in northeast Philadelphia.

A day or two before he died, they thought he was improving, as he slept better and ate and drank some. But when his condition worsened, they called their pastor and then a funeral home.

Police later asked why they didn't call a doctor.

"They both pretty much said, 'We believe in God for healing. We don't take it ourselves, either,'" Assistant District Attorney Joanne Pescatore said Thursday. She believes the child suffered.

A new vertical method for growing crops which claims to use less land and only 5% of the water usually needed is being piloted at a Devon zoo.

The system grows plants in trays of water moving on a conveyor belt.

The company behind it, Valcent, based in Launceston, Cornwall, said it was a sustainable solution to the world's "rapidly-diminishing resources."

The hydroponic system rotates the plants on a conveyor belt via a "feeding station" to create airflow and stimulate growth.

According to Chris Bradford, managing director of Valcent, a 100sq-metre machine, like the one installed at Paignton Zoo, can grow up to 11,200 plants, which, he says, is 20 times more than could be grown conventionally in a field covering the same area.

The system is designed to be "eco-friendly" using solar power or wind energy, with the water used to grow the plants being recycled.

"It doesn't require a green field site so it can be used in urban areas, in warehouses and in deserts," Mr Bradford explained.

Every year, thousands of dolphins are herded into a tranquil cove in Japan where some are captured for sale to marine parks, the rest slaughtered for their meat.

Despite the efforts of the Japanese authorities to keep it hidden, the massacre has been captured on film by a guerrilla documentary team led by the man who trained Flipper.

Until now, the yearly slaughter of 2,000 dolphins in a small town in Japan has been one of the country's most shameful secrets. But The Cove – a new documentary shot in the style of an espionage thriller – is about to change all that. The film follows the attempts of an American documentary team to penetrate the veil of secrecy surrounding the annual dolphin 'drive' in the fishing town of Taiji.

Canadian scientists have become the first in the world to decode the DNA of breast cancer cells, and have discovered, to their surprise, that the gene mutations in those tumours shift as the disease spreads.

The finding brings researchers unprecedented information about how breast cancer progresses and shows that the disease is a moving target that often changes the way it operates.

Researchers with the B.C. Cancer Agency say they made their discovery after decoding the entire genome of a patient's metastatic breast cancer and finding all the genome's mutations.

In January of 1954, just a year before his death, Albert Einstein wrote the following letter to philosopher Erik Gutkind after reading his book, 'Choose Life: The Biblical Call to Revolt'. Apparently Einstein had only read the book due to repeated recommendation by their mutual friend Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer. The letter was bought at auction in May 2008, for £170,000. Unsurprisingly, one of the unsuccessful bidders was Richard Dawkins.

Faith healing murderers -- six months each

A US couple who prayed rather than seeking medical attention for their dying daughter have been sentenced to six months in jail.

The 11-year-old died of an undiagnosed but treatable form of diabetes.

Judge Vincent Howard ordered the couple to each serve one month in jail each year for the next six years.

Prosecutors said the couple had recklessly killed the youngest of their four children by ignoring clear symptoms of severe illness as she became too weak to speak, eat, drink or walk.

They said the couple had a legal duty to take their daughter to a doctor but had instead relied totally on prayer for healing.

Kara died on the floor of the family's rural home as people surrounded her and prayed. The emergency services were only called after she stopped breathing.

The couple are appealing against their convictions.

SAO PAULO (AP) - The founder of one of Brazil’s biggest evangelical churches siphoned off billions of dollars in donations from his mostly poor followers to buy jewelry, TV stations and other businesses for himself, authorities charged Tuesday.

Prosecutors charge that money collected for charitable work, evangelism and building funds was used instead to purchase companies. Those companies in turn were allegedly used to launder money, which was then loaned to Macedo and other church leaders, and used to purchase additional businesses, as well as real estate, aircraft and a TV station.

Two of the companies involved are said to have been responsible for moving and concealing more than $71 million.

Authorities claim that Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus, as it is known in Brazil, raises approximately U.S. $ 1.4 billion per year in donations.

In some countries the church works under a local version of the name ‘Stop Suffering’.

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA (BosNewsLife)– Christians in Somalia faced a tense day Thursday, August 13, amid fresh reports that fighters of the country’s main Islamic insurgent group al-Shabab beheaded four Christian aid workers for refusing to renounce their faith in Christ.

ICC said that on August 4, an unidentified junior al-Shabab militant notified families of the victims that the four Christians had been beheaded for apostasy. He allegedly described the Christians as promoters of “fitna,” a Muslim term for religious discord.

“All the four apostates were given an opportunity to return to Islam to be released but they all declined the generous offer,” a witness of the beheading allegedly said.

Leaders of traditionalist Catholicism, a mixture of Roman Catholicism and native rituals, expelled 32 Christians from their homes in a village in Hidalgo state and another 25 from a town in Oaxaca; in each case, the evangelicals were deprived of their property for refusing to participate in drunken festivals that included worship of Catholic icons.

The Milenio Hidalgo newspaper reported on July 28 that townspeople in Los Parajes had offered to allow the Christians to return if they denied their faith and paid the equivalent of nearly $13,900 in “fines” for having refused to contribute to the traditionalist Catholic festivals, but they refused.

At that time the pastor of the group was beaten and tied up in a futile effort to force him to change his faith. Likewise, in the current case authorities told the Christians their expulsion could have been avoided if they had rejected their faith.

The Skull Cathedral of Otranto: Where the Bones of 800 Martyrs Adorn the Walls

The year was 1480 and the fateful day July 28 when a fleet of 70 to 200 Ottoman ships reached the city of Otranto, then part of the Kingdom of Naples. It was the beginning of the Ottoman wars (1453-1683) in Europe and invader Mohammed II had conquered Constantinople just 28 years earlier. The garrison and the citizens took cover in the Castle of Otranto but as it had no cannons for defense, it was soon conquered and the garrison killed.

On August 12, 800 citizens were taken to the hill of Minerva, now called the Hill of the Martyrs, and beheaded because they refused to renounce their Catholic faith. Their remains were taken to the cathedral and the skulls preserved in the altar piece as a prominent reminder of these 800 martyrs.
