Google as accidentally published a video detailing a new feature coming to your Google account: transparency. The feature, called "Google Dashboard" gives new insight and control into the data Google has on you.

Internet Use Changes Older Brains

Adults with little internet experience show changes in their brain activity after just one week online, a new study finds.

The results suggest Internet training can stimulate neural activation patterns and could potentially enhance brain function and cognition in older adults.

As the brain ages, a number of structural and functional changes occur, including atrophy, or decay, reductions in cell activity and increases in complex things like deposits of amyloid plaques and tau tangles, which can impact cognitive function.

Theses brain scans show activity in savvy Web users, above, and those with little experience, below. Note how in the second set of scans, done after a week of training, both groups show similar patterns of brain activity.

The 10-minute facelift: How celebrities have discovered the man with the golden gun

The French know a lot about suffering for beauty - but I'm not sure les Parisiennes feel pain like the rest of us, if a new ten-minute facelift, now available in the UK, is anything to go by.

The facelift, created by French dermatologist Dr Maurice Dray, is a non-invasive answer to going under the knife. It uses injections of man-made chemicals called biphasic tricalcium phosphates (BTCPs) to restructure the jowls by encouraging the skin to produce collagen, the connective tissue that keeps our skin naturally taut when young.

BTCPs are commonly used in porcelain and dental powders, and medically as antacids or calcium supplements. For the facelift they come as micro-particles suspended in a hyaluronic acid gel.

Hyaluronic acid, a substance found in the body that helps to hydrate the skin, is the principal ingredient in many facefillers - it plumps out deep grooves and wrinkles.

Sookhaphahpdee Ltd., a little-known pharmaceutical firm in Bangkok, Thailand, has been working on a cancer treatments for decades and has amassed some extraordinary evidence for the effectiveness of its product Yaamet-Dor.

In 2007, the results of a a 4-year, population-based, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial that involved approximately 1,200 women were announced. It reported that Yaamet-Dor, at 1,100 units per day, led to a 60 percent reduction in cancer incidence.

When the study excluded cancers diagnosed during the first year, those more likely to have been pre-existing, Yaamet-Dor resulted in a 77 percent reduction in cancer incidence.

Other research also has suggested that the incidence of prostate, pancreatic and breast cancer is reduced among those taking at least moderate amounts of Yaamet-Dor.

According to a Georgetown University study released Tuesday, 79 percent of Americans are missing the point entirely with regard to such wide-ranging topics as politics, consumerism, taxes, entertainment, fashion, and professional wrestling.

"From the overweight housewife who eats bag after bag of reduced-fat Ruffles, to the school board that bans Huckleberry Finn for using the word 'nigger,' to the Manhattan stockbroker who uses recycled-paper checks to pay for gas for his behemoth SUV, the tendency of Americans to really just not get it transcends all boundaries of class, color, religion, sexual orientation, and political persuasion," said Dr. Ronald Shaw of Georgetown's Center For American Studies.

Polling nearly 8,000 Americans on a variety of subjects, the study found that only 21 percent of those surveyed had even the slightest clue.

EVER wondered what the Arabic or Chinese press are saying about the issues of the day? Finding out just got a lot easier, at least for those using the Firefox web browser.

A new plug-in identifies the language used on a web page and automatically provides a translation, leaving the layout of the page unchanged.

The plug-in, designed by the San Francisco-based Worldwide Lexicon project, recognises over 40 languages. Users start by telling the software which language they prefer. When a page written in a different language loads, the software searches for translations provided by the project's community of volunteers. If none is available it uses an online services such as Google Translate.

A test version of the plug-in is available at the Firefox website.

Scientists have produced four baby monkeys who each have three biological parents.

They used an IVF procedure designed to stop the spread of incurable inherited diseases.

Scientists believe the breakthrough could lead to the first geneticallyengineered children within a few years.

It has provoked an ethical storm, however. Critics say it is a step towards an era of hybrid children and warn that it erodes the sanctity of life.

The technique is intended to help women who carry genetic diseases. It involves transferring healthy DNA from the mother's egg cell into an egg donated by another woman.

Children conceived by the technique would inherit DNA from three sources - their mother, the donor and their father.

The American team who produced the macaque monkeys - named Mito, Tracker, Spindler and Spindy - say the technique could be used to eradicate potentially fatal forms of inherited epilepsy, blindness and heart disease.

A genetic tweak of the unfertilized eggs of macaque monkeys effectively prevented the transmission of diseases typically passed down through the maternal line, U.S. scientists reported.

The hope is that the method could prevent inherited diseases passed from human mothers to their children through mutated DNA in cell "power plants" called mitochondria. Mitochondria play a basic role by producing energy for each cell, but they also contain their own genes, called mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), the researchers say.

"Mitochondrial genes are very vulnerable to mutations that cause numerous human diseases," noted lead researcher Shoukhrat Mitalipov, from the Division of Reproductive Sciences and the Oregon National Primate Research Center and the Oregon Stem Cell Center,

Look out all you stoners and dopers, because the cops could soon wield a handheld device that detects your favorite controlled substance. Spit into this little plastic test tube, and you're busted — any cocaine, heroin, cannabis, amphetamines, and methamphetamine you might be partying with is no longer a secret.

Phillips, a company that makes TVs and all kinds of other techno-stuff, created this sophisticated dope-a-lysing device using nanotechnology, with a clever use of electromagnets and nanoparticles that can separate the sober from the impaired. After 90 seconds, the verdict shows up on a color-coded readout.

Philips hopes to roll out this privacy-invading drug tester in Europe by the end of the year, perhaps destined to become the next tool in the loathsome War on Drugs in the United States. My suggestion to Phillips: Create a gizmo that detects texting while driving.

Many of us would love to be able to cut down the weekly shopping bill by growing our own food.

But with slugs, dirt and physical labour to contend with, not to mention a lack of time, it's often an unrealistic aim.

Now scientists have come up with a solution by inventing a machine which grows crops and flowers without any soil.

The Power Plant uses technology invented by Nasa for astronauts to grow fresh fruit and vegetables while in space. Seeds are placed on to a 'grow sponge' and a mains-generated microjet system sprays them with oxygenated, nutrient-rich water.

The device can be used to grow fruits such as strawberries and small vegetables such as beans and peas, and is also perfect for herbs such as basil and coriander.

On April 26, a national public health emergency was declared by officials in the U.S. Departments of Health and Homeland Security. ^1,2 We were told it was necessary to declare a national emergency because people were getting sick from a new swine flu virus that began in Mexico and might cause a deadly influenza pandemic.

So far, the vast majority of people who get sick with swine flu have symptoms that are no worse than the regular flu and recover completely. ^{3,4,5, 6}

Will States Compensate Vaccine Injured Children?

And there are more questions that need to be answered: Are the states prepared to provide financial compensation to children harmed by swine flu vaccines given in schools? Are parents going to be given complete, truthful information about swine flu vaccine risks and have the right to say “YES” or “NO” before their children are lined up and vaccinated in the school setting?

A $300 million cash-for-clunkers-type federal program to boost sales of energy-efficient home appliances provides a glimmer of hope for beleaguered makers of washing machines and dishwashers, but it's probably not enough to lift companies such as Whirlpool (NYSE:WHR - News) and Electrolux out of the worst down cycle in the sector's history.

Beginning late this fall, the program authorizes rebates of $50 to $200 for purchases of high-efficiency household appliances. The money is part of the broader economic stimulus bill passed earlier this year. Program details will vary by state, and the Energy Dept. has set a deadline of Oct. 15 for states to file formal applications.

"These rebates will help families make the transition to more efficient appliances, making purchases that will directly stimulate the economy," Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in a statement announcing the plan.

At least 1,200 veterans across the country have been mistakenly told by the Veterans Administration that they suffer from a fatal neurological disease.

One of the leaders of a Gulf War veterans group says panicked veterans from Alabama, Florida, Kansas, North Carolina, West Virginia and Wyoming have contacted the group about the error.

Denise Nichols, the vice president of the National Gulf War Resource Center, says the VA is blaming a coding error for the mistake.

Letters dated Aug. 12 were intended to notify veterans who have Lou Gehrig's disease of disability benefits available to them.

Calls to the VA were not immediately returned Monday.

Lou Gehrig's disease, or ALS, is a rapidly progressive disease that attacks the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles.

Boxing is returning to the big screen.

Monday, it was announced that the Sept. 19 bout between Juan Manuel Marquez and Floyd Mayweather will be shown in more than 170 theaters nationwide (suggested price: $12.50 to $15) in addition to HBO-Pay Per-View ($49.95).

"The young audience, they don't want to stay at home. They don't want to go to a bar," said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, who struck the arrangement with National CineMedia's Fathom and insists this move will not hurt pay-per-view sales. "This is going to open up the sport of boxing to a new and young audience."
