KISSING can be a crime in India and can get you into trouble. The country's most famous actress and most well-known female politician have discovered that while society is modernising at breakneck speed, kissing is not permitted.

One of the two controversial kisses was at a social greeting. The other occurred in the latest Bollywood film. Both kisses have exposed how society is struggling to cope with increasing Westernisation.

In the country that produced the Kama Sutra, a lawyer in Madhya Pradesh has filed a criminal case against a kiss between India's two biggest heart-throbs — former Miss World Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan.

In their blockbuster, Dhoom 2, they kiss for somewhat longer than the usual fleeting embrace shown in Indian films. The lawyer, Shailendra Dwivedi, accused the stars of lowering the dignity of Indian women and encouraging obscenity among India's youth.

A few days earlier, when Vasundhara Raje, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, greeted a woman friend at a World Economic Forum meeting with a kiss on the cheek, all hell broke loose in Rajasthan.

Conservatives called the kiss "obscene" and "vulgar" and demanded her resignation.

For freelance editor Srinvasan Dutta, the indignation is hypocritical. "If kissing is so bad, how come we ended up with over a billion people? Having sex with anything that moves is fine, but don't kiss," Ms Dutta said.

The inability of some Indian men to cope with independent women can also be seen in the alarming rise in acid attacks by jilted lovers.

Last month, Suman Khujur, a mother of three in west Delhi, had acid poured on her and was forced to drink acid by her former lover. Khujur, 35, died in hospital from horrific injuries. In another attack, a 17-year-old girl in a Delhi suburb suffered extensive burns after a fellow student threw acid on her after she ended their relationship.

There have been about 14 acid attacks in the capital in the past six months.

MOVES to bring sex out of the closet in largely conservative India have kicked up a morality debate between educators who say sex education will reduce HIV rates, and critics who fear it will corrupt young minds.

It’s an emotive issue pitting modernists against conservatives in a country with the world’s highest number of HIV cases at about 5.7 million, a figure that experts say may balloon to over 20 million by 2010. Biology teacher Thelma Seqeira infuriates conservatives in India every time she tells her students about masturbation, condoms and homosexuality.

Seqeira is doing exactly what India’s federal government wants the country’s 29 states and seven federally administered regions to do - fight the exponential spread of HIV/AIDS with information on safe sex.

Most Tantric sacred lovemaking texts substitute more poetic terms to refer to the male and female sexual anatomy. Penis is lingam. Vagina is yoni.

Using such terminology is generally perceived to be more respectful, sensual and romantic.

The Kama Sutra, by Vatsyayana classifies the lingam and yoni according to size.

Male – Lingam: Hare (small) – Bull (medium) – Horse (large)

Female – Yoni: Deer (small) – Mare (medium) – Elephant (large)

According to Vatsyayana (and common sense) matches of equal size are ideal, but lovers can manage the other combinations quite nicely. Certain positions are helpful when there is a mismatch of genital sizes.

The Kama Sutra dates back to about 400 CE, about 1,600 years. It is a manual for developing the erotic sensibilities, knowledge and skill, including specific instruction on sexual techniques, as well as many other sensual and cultural expressions, referred to as the 64 arts. The approach to sex in the Kama Sutra is from a secular (non-religious, non-spiritual) perspective, whereas Tantra is definitely spiritual. The Kama Sutra does not in any way deny the value of spiritual practice, it is just not presenting that perspective. Tantra is all about awakening to full enlightenment, while the Kama Sutra is about great, satisfying, fulfilling sex, primarily between heterosexual couples. In the Kama Sutra sex was considered an essential aspect of everyone’s education.

Gingerbread Kama Sutra

1		cup butter softened
1 1/2		cup white sugar
2		tablespoons light corn syrup
4		tablespoons salt
1		egg
2 1/2		cups all-purpose flour
2		teaspoons baking soda
2		teaspoons ground ginger
1/2		teaspoon ground cloves
1/4		teaspoon ground allspice
		Decorator frosting tubes in white, black, red and yellow
		Cinnamon candies

In a large bowl, cream together the butter, sugar and corn syrup until smooth. Beat in the egg. Combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and allspice; stir into the creamed mixture. Cover and refrigerate dough for at least 1/2 hour.

On a floured surface, roll the dough out to 1/4 inch in thickness. Cut into desired shapes using templates, shown below:.
