A tiny solar cell doubles the efficiency of common photovoltaics' conversion of sunlight to electricity by capturing the energy from a broader spectrum of light.

A tiny chip similar to the solar cells carried by many satellites and other spacecraft today--including the surprisingly long-lived Mars Rovers--has shattered previous records for maximum efficiency in producing electricity from sunlight. "This is the photovoltaic equivalent of the four-minute mile," affirms Larry Kazmerski, director of the Department of Energy's National Center for Photovoltaics in Colorado. "This is a disruptive technology that eventually could provide us, at least in the Southwest, with cost-competitive electricity fairly quickly."

The specifics: a germanium wafer is spun at high speeds and subjected to various gases that encourage the growth of layers of semiconducting material such as gallium arsenide. "We have somewhere between 20 and 30 layers of semiconductor material," explains David Lillington, president of Spectrolab, Inc., which developed the new cell. The resulting layers in one single solar device respond to different spectra of light. The top layer, for example, captures the energy of blue light while the middle layer absorbs green and the bottom uses red. Such triple-junction solar cells are specially tuned to work with concentrated light, in this case the wattage of 240 suns.

Google is in frantic talks with big media companies to halt any legal threats coming YouTube’s way, reports FT. We already knew Google CEO Eric Schmidt and other managers have met with CEOs of CBS, Viacom, Time Warner, NBC Universal, News Corp and others. Now the story says Google is offering tens of millions of dollars in upfront payments for the right to broadcast their video content legally on YouTube.

Netco has identified more than 100 properties that are the most popular, or fastest-growing, with its users and is building what it calls a "brand universe" Web site around each one. Set to launch throughout 2007, they will bring content from throughout Yahoo!'s network into one destination for fans.

First example, an already launched "brand universe" for Nintendo's new Wii console, includes articles from Yahoo! Games, fan pictures from photo site Flickr, purchase options from Yahoo! Shopping, user questions and responses from Yahoo! Answers and links to outside articles from bookmarking site Del.icio.us.

AUBURNDALE, Florida (AP) -- Rosalie Bradford, who held records for being the world's heaviest woman and for losing the most weight, has died. She was 63.

Bradford weighed 1,050 pounds in January 1987, according to the 1994 Guinness Book of Records. She lost 736 pounds to weigh 314 pounds in September 1992, according to the record book.

She died Wednesday at a hospital in Lakeland, about 10 miles from her Auburndale home in central Florida.

Publicist Stephen Nortier said Bradford weighed around 400 pounds just before dying. He said the cause of death won't be known until a medical examiner's report, but Bradford had spent the last year bedridden with complications from having her lymph nodes severed years ago.

At her largest, Bradford was 8 feet wide and took 90 minutes to bathe.

She credited Richard Simmons, the flamboyant fitness guru, with helping her lose weight. The two began corresponding after a friend of Bradford's wrote Simmons when she tried to commit suicide.

Bradford blamed her lifelong battle with obesity on abandonment, which bred a food addiction. Her Web site claims her peak weight was more than 1,200 pounds.

"I was just like an addict -- lie, cheat, steal, whatever to get my drug of choice. And my drug of choice was food," Bradford said in a 1999 interview with The Ledger of Lakeland.

In the frigid waters off Argentina's southern Valdés Peninsula, the southern right whale is under attack from an odd-sounding predator: the seemingly docile seagull.

Uncovered garbage dumps and waste from fish-processing operations have fueled a spike in the number of kelp gulls in the region's coastal towns (Argentina map).

Experts say the birds, which nest near the prime breeding waters for the endangered whales, are causing a peck of problems.

"The gulls are landing on the whales and pecking through their skin to feed on the blubber, which is an important source of calories," says biologist Marcelo Bertellotti of Argentina's Patagonia University.

"This is causing lesions and impacting whale behavior." The kelp gull is a flexible eater that hunts insects and scavenges through trash heaps.

But it is especially fond of whale blubber, normally dining on dead animals or snatching up blubber dislodged by the whales' trademark somersaults, Bertellotti says.

However, some aggressive gulls go further for a meal.

"Some individuals have developed the capacity to take skin and blubber from live whales," he said.

Mothers and Calves Attacked

Researchers don't know what causes some the birds to get aggressive, but they note that the attacks often create wounds and, in some cases, transmit viruses and bacteria.

Bertellotti and Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina (FVSA), an organization associated with the World Wildlife Federation, say the kelp gulls' pesky gouges force whales to dive and flee.

That interrupts crucial rest and feeding periods, forcing the animals to expend energy normally used to make fat layers for long migrations or to produce mother's milk.
