Remembering the essence of a clipmark

I just wanted to briefly mention a concern that I've had lately. I have recently noticed a lot of public clipmarks that contain entire articles/pages (or most of it). For two important reasons I am hoping this will change.

First, in my opinion, the key distinguishing aspect of clipmarks is that instead of simply posting links to entire web pages, we are clipping and sharing the best piece or pieces of information from within those pages (the "sweetspot" if you will). It is my opinion that clipping too much information substantially reduces the power of the clip as a way for people to quickly toggle through bits of information about all sorts of topics in less time. Basically, when it comes to a clipmark, I think that more information often results in less quality.

The second reason pertains to respecting the rights of content owners. There are many different types of clipmarks that are generated from all sorts of different web sites, so this concern certainly does not apply across the board. But, when small nuggets of information are clipped, they can serve as powerful drivers of traffic to the source of that content. In this way, content creators benefit from having their content clipped. This is fair and good for everyone. But clipping an entire page clearly lessens the likelihood of a click through to the source page because all of the information can be gathered from the clip. This is not the intention of clipmarks and, often times, is not fair to the original source of the content.

I hope the idea of clipping small pieces of information instead of entire web pages is one you will all agree creates a better experience for everyone and shows greater respect for the rights of original content creators.

For now, I will just note what seems to be the bizarre and incoherent contradiction in the law, noted by Atrios yesterday, that in-person, actual sex between Foley and a 16-year-old page would be perfectly legal in D.C. and in most places in the U.S. (see UPDATE below), but it seems that it is a criminal act for Foley to discuss or solicit sexual acts with the same page over the Internet. Despite all the irritatingly righteous (and overheated) "pedophile" language being tossed around, in the overwhelming majority of states, and in Washington DC, the legal age of consent for sex is 16 years old. That means that actual, in-person sex between Foley and a 16-year-old page in D.C. would not be criminal at all (though it likely could have other legal implications).

But under the so-called "Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006" (of which Foley was a co-sponsor), along with 18 U.S.C. 2251, discussion or solicitation of sexual acts between Foley and any "minor" under the age of 18 would appear to be a criminal offense (see Adam Walsh Act, Sec. 111(14) ("MINOR.--The term 'minor' means an individual who has not attained the age of 18 years") and 18 U.S.C. Sec. 2256 (1) (“'minor' means any person under the age of eighteen years").

The startling prediction of the "many worlds" interpretation of quantum mechanics is that when systems like your mind interact with small quantum systems, every possible quantum outcome actually happens in a different "world." Loosely speaking a "world" is a complex, causally connected, partially or completely closed set of interacting sub-systems which don't significantly interfere with other, more remote, elements in the superposition. Any complex system and its coupled environment, with a large number of internal degrees of freedom, qualifies as a world. An observer, with internal irreversible processes, counts as a complex system. In terms of the wavefunction, a world is a decohered branch of the universal wavefunction, which represents a single macrostate. (See "What is decoherence?") The worlds all exist simultaneously in a non- interacting linear superposition.

Worlds, or branches of the universal wavefunction, split when different components of a quantum superposition "decohere" from each other [7a], [7b], [10]. Decoherence refers to the loss of coherency or absence of interference effects between the elements of the superposition. For two branches or worlds to interfere with each other all the atoms, subatomic particles, photons and other degrees of freedom in each world have to be in the same state, which usually means they all must be in the same place or significantly overlap in both worlds, simultaneously.

What are the Fallacy Files?

A collection of named fallacies—such as "ad hominem"—that is, types of bad reasoning which someone has thought distinctive and interesting enough to name and describe. This collection took the form, primarily, of the study and acquisition of books and articles on the named fallacies, especially textbooks and reference books. You can find individual files on the named fallacies via the Taxonomy of Logical Fallacies, or from the alphabetical index in the scroll bar to your left.

A collection of fallacious, or otherwise bad, arguments, that is, examples of reasoning which may commit one or more of the named fallacies under 1, or are bad in some way yet to be classified. This collection took the form of clippings from newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, photocopies of pages of books, and—in a few rare cases—entire articles or books which were rich sources of bad reasoning. 2. MySpace.com is Spam 2.0. MySpace has spawned an incredibly successful twist on the age-old art of self-promotion, allowing--even encouraging--the marketing of everything from bands to businesses on their site. Essentially, they've opened up a channel through which to solicit and promote everyone and everything, most importantly the individual. The whole site is, in essence, a marketing tool that everyone who registers has access to. Users constantly receive spam-like messages from said bands, business, and individuals looking to add more "friends" (and therefore more potential fans, consumers, or witnesses) to their online identity. A testament to this strange new social paradigm is the phrase "Thanks for the Add," a nicety offered when one MySpace user adds another as a friend. Best yet, to use the site, members must log in, causing them to inadvertently view advertisements, and then read their messages on a page with even more advertisements. In the world of MySpace, Spam is earth, air, fire, and water.

I’m giving strong consideration to the idea of dropping the Pop Character limit to 1,000 from 2,000. I’d like to explain my reasoning and give everyone a chance to weigh in prior to making a decision. At the end of the day, I need to make the decision that I believe best honors the integrity of what Clipmarks is all about, but I certainly don’t want to do that before hearing what our users have to say.

The reason we created Clipmarks was to give life to those wonderful bits of information that are buried within pages. I’m talking about the bits that literally make your brain come alive with interest, curiosity, bewilderment, passion, anger, hope, etc. They are the bits that you feel compelled to capture, comment on and immediately expose to other people.

Picture the offline act of reading a magazine or newspaper article and coming across something that so strongly grabs your attention that you immediately point it out to whoever is around you. You either blurt it out for others to hear or pass it along to someone, pointing to the specific piece of the page you want them to read. Well, our vision for Clipmarks is to create a global platform for that experience to occur in response to bits of “clipworthy” information people find on the web. Too many times I read a clip on the site and think that there is actually a clip within the clip that would have made a better clip…say that 10 times fast J

In my opinion, once a clip is too long, it’s impact as a unique form a content gets diluted. There is certainly no perfect size clip, but there is a size that, once exceeded, can no longer be considered a “clip”. We’re trying to find that fine line where the essence of a clip is honored, meaning is conveyed and an informed decision can be made by the reader about whether to click through to the source to read more. My gut is telling me that 2,000 characters is still too high.

Clipmarks update...a few site changes

This morning, we uploaded a few changes to the site. There are two that I’ll briefly mention and then one that I want to discuss a bit more in depth.

Each day, we will now have a Featured Popper on the site (below the Featured Clipper on the right side of the home page). We’re looking for ways to recognize users who consistently pop clips on the site.

Under each open clip (just to the right of the clipper’s username) you will see a little button that displays the number of followers the clipper has. Clicking this number will open a window that lists each of the users who are following that clipper.

we added a little “x” next to each username in the comments section of each clip. If you click the “x” a little window will open that allows you to hide that user’s clip and/or comments as well as block them from commenting on your clips.
