Clipmarks update...a few site changes

This morning, we uploaded a few changes to the site. There are two that I’ll briefly mention and then one that I want to discuss a bit more in depth.

Each day, we will now have a Featured Popper on the site (below the Featured Clipper on the right side of the home page). We’re looking for ways to recognize users who consistently pop clips on the site.

Under each open clip (just to the right of the clipper’s username) you will see a little button that displays the number of followers the clipper has. Clicking this number will open a window that lists each of the users who are following that clipper.

we added a little “x” next to each username in the comments section of each clip. If you click the “x” a little window will open that allows you to hide that user’s clip and/or comments as well as block them from commenting on your clips.

Protesting Clippers could face Prison or Fines.

clipper's remarks: Well it's too late for me I reckon, so I might as well just keep on keepin' on peacefully protesting. Now more than ever, it seems so necessary. This is another "I dare you" clip. Are they trying to scare, intimidate or threaten people to the point, that they just don't dare comment or clip or pop or blog or speak out anymore? Should I just cave in and "turn myself in" quarterly and bow down to oppression? I think not. I will not be silenced. If I ever stop clipping about all this, you'll know why. See ya in Guantanamo!

- The White House's own recently de-classified strategy for "winning the war on terror" targets Internet conspiracy theories as a recruiting ground for terrorists and threatens to "diminish" their influence.

- Chertoff pledged to dispatch Homeland Security agents to local police departments in order to aid in the apprehension of domestic terrorists who use the Internet as a political tool.

Bloggers Who Criticize Government May Face Prison

Bill would allow rounding up and imprisoning of non-registered political writers

You'd be forgiven for thinking that it was some new restriction on free speech in Communist China. But it isn't. The U.S. Government wants to force bloggers and online grassroots activists to register and regularly report their activities to Congress in the latest astounding attack on the internet and the First Amendment.

Richard A. Viguerie, Chairman of GrassrootsFreedom.com, a website dedicated to fighting efforts to silence grassroots movements, states:

"Section 220 of S. 1, the lobbying reform bill currently before the Senate, would require grassroots causes, even bloggers, who communicate to 500 or more members of the public on policy matters, to register and report quarterly to Congress the same as the big K Street lobbyists. Section 220 would amend existing lobbying reporting law by creating the most expansive intrusion on First Amendment rights ever. For the first time in history, critics of Congress will need to register and report with Congress itself."

In other words Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats may redefine the meaning of lobbying in order that political communications to and even between citizens falls under the same legislation.

Under current law any 'lobbyist" who 'knowingly and willingly fails to file or report." quarterly to the government faces criminal charges including a possible jail term of up to one year.

The amendment is currently on hold.

This latest attack on bloggers comes hot on the heels of Republican Senator John McCain's proposal to introduce legislation that would fine blogs up to $300,000 for offensive statements, photos and videos posted by visitors on comment boards.

clipper's remarks: Much discussion has taken place over the actual goals of clipmarks. I think this earlier version of the site states the mission well. Sometimes all the cute little updates and upgrades overshadow the power of a simle statement. So having found this home page version archived in the "Way back Machine" I thought I'd clip it. Of course since I cclipped most of the page that doesn't really work well with the mission. but it did seem like a good way to show ti to fellow clipmarks users

Peeps Be Warned !

Low-Pressure Peeps

We all know that Peeps are light, fluffy, and filled with air. This of course begs the question, "What happens to Peeps in a vacuum?" (Surely you were about to ask the same thing, right?)

Stage 1:

To the left is a peep in a side-arm flask, attached to a vacuum hose. The vacuum has not yet been applied...

Stage 2:

Vacuum is applied to the container. The Peep begins to expand...

Stage 3:

The Peep reaches its maximum volume. The mighty elastic Peep! Alas, it has stretched to its limit, and begins to lose air...

Stage 4:

The vacuum is turned off. It seems that the Peep has, in fact, lost a bit of air. Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation failed to bring back this poor Peep, but it was still yummy.

Conclusions:

There are several important implications indicated by these results:

Peeps are poorly equipped as fighter pilots, supporting the Supreme Court ruling that banning peeps from the cockpits of F-16 planes in combat does not violate the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1992. (Orville & Wilbur Peep vs. US Government, 1994)

Peeps should exercise caution when ascending after deep-sea diving excursions, as sudden decreases in pressure may exceed the structural integrity of visceral parenchyma.

This may explain the tragic demise of the Col. Lewis Peep expedition which attempted to reach the peak of Mt. Everest in the spring of 1856. It is important to note that these data do not exclude alternative theories suggesting that the group was devoured by a pack of diabetic mountain lions. (Schroedinger, Heisenberg, & Bohr, 1922).

Los Angeles, CA – A thirteen-year-old girl posing as a record executive on MySpace has lured several bands to Los Angeles with promises of a record contract.

Ashley Morgan, 13, has used her 'sonymusicexec' MySpace profile to lure several bands to her Los Angeles home. Ashley was grounded so she couldn't talk to us on the phone for this report.

On arriving at Ashley's house, band members were lured inside with free pizza and Crystal Light. "How could we resist?" said McLeod. "She locked us in the basement and told us we had to play for her free. It wasn't that bad, so we stuck around for a while. Her mom eventually kicked us out."

Reducing the pop limit? - Please Vote!

I believe very strongly AGAINST the pop limit. Does it add value to any of you? Have you ever clicked on a clip and then said to yourself "this clip is too long - it's ruining my Clipmarks experience?"

On the other hand, I wonder if you've ever missed a nice clip because it couldn't be popped because it was too long.

I've had emails where people said they wished they could have popped one of my clips. Why can't they?

It makes no sense to me.

Reducing the pop limit?

The reason we created Clipmarks was to give life to those wonderful bits of information that are buried within pages. I’m talking about the bits that literally make your brain come alive with interest, curiosity, bewilderment, passion, anger, hope, etc. They are the bits that you feel compelled to capture, comment on and immediately expose to other people.

I hate the pop limit. I think it should be completely removed.

Short of that, I think it should be a user preference. If a user agrees with your vision, that only the bite-size stuff matters, then their pop/sort would only consider clips of appropriate size. Maybe the size itself could be user driven.

Only the subject line determines if I’m going to click on a clip or not. If the subject line is interesting, I click it and read the clip. If the lenght of the clip is 500 or 50k bytes of text - why would that matter to me? All I see is the first few lines anyway, and I scroll to read the rest if I want to. If not, I move on. What is hard about this?

I think the whole idea is wrong.

I’m giving strong consideration to the idea of dropping the Pop Character limit to 1,000 from 2,000. I’d like to explain my reasoning and give everyone a chance to weigh in prior to making a decision. At the end of the day, I need to make the decision that I believe best honors the integrity of what Clipmarks is all about, but I certainly don’t want to do that before hearing what our users have to say.

Picture the offline act of reading a magazine or newspaper article and coming across something that so strongly grabs your attention that you immediately point it out to whoever is around you. You either blurt it out for others to hear or pass it along to someone, pointing to the specific piece of the page you want them to read. Well, our vision for Clipmarks is to create a global platform for that experience to occur in response to bits of “clipworthy” information people find on the web. Too many times I read a clip on the site and think that there is actually a clip within the clip that would have made a better clip…say that 10 times fast J

In my opinion, once a clip is too long, it’s impact as a unique form a content gets diluted. There is certainly no perfect size clip, but there is a size that, once exceeded, can no longer be considered a “clip”. We’re trying to find that fine line where the essence of a clip is honored, meaning is conveyed and an informed decision can be made by the reader about whether to click through to the source to read more. My gut is telling me that 2,000 characters is still too high.

DebraFord123'sGoogle Pages- first 8 Pages Just launched

clipper's remarks: I spent the last 3 -5 hours building a new website and I just launched 38 pages. There are online games, weather, links to videos, over 200 blog titles - some partial some full entries, translation tools, money conversions, a hubble tracker, Nasa image of the day, and of course links to some of my other sites.

This may have been one of my most productive web building sessions yet. It's a combination of the Great features in Google Labs and the fact that I finally know what I'm doing. All in all I am pleased and I expect this site to grow. Who knows what I could have done in a full eight hours. But, I have to split my time these days. Other duties call.Later this month I will put in a few more sessions on this site in particular.I know it was after two when I started but, I'm not exactly sure how long it took. What I can say is that people who talk bad about Google don't seem to realize that they are spending their money to make all of this stuff easier for us.
